AAUP Report on Nontenured Faculty
In a
press release issued December 11, 2006, the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) reported that contingent faculty are increasing in number at institutions of higher education. Contingent faculty include part-time faculty, non-tenure-track full-time faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate-student teachers. AAUP based its report, entitled
AAUP Contingent Faculty Index 2006, on the US Department of Education's 2003 data, which found that contingent faculty made up 65 percent of all faculty at colleges and universities in the United States. The increasing reliance on contingent professors may have troubling consequences for academic freedom, as these scholars lack the security enjoyed by tenured faculty.
