About the Work
Mary Lum is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice includes drawing, installation, still and moving images, and artist’s books. For her project, Lum created 64 Scenes, a printed paper strip the width of 35mm film. The faux “filmstrip” is composed of dozens of tiny images, like individual frames of film fragments from color news photographs. A strip of text in tiny type runs alongside the images, analogous to the sound stripe on film. On the reverse side, each frame is aligned with a text created from the stage directions in plays, collaged into a readable but nonlinear narrative. The object may be “read” by the viewer, used as a bookmark, cut or torn into individual images, or fan-folded, image by image, to create a tiny book.
