About the Work
Clifton Meador is well known among makers and collectors of artist’s books. The dark, subtle imagery of his Tourist/Refugee was developed from his photographs of a former Soviet luxury tourist hotel in Tblisi that for more than ten years has served as a “temporary” shelter for refugees from an ethnically cleansed province of the Republic of Georgia. The book is a poetic, visual essay on displacement, rootlessness, and home, seen from a most unusual perspective; it includes a brief text by the artist. Meador is a most unusual artist, in that he has had extensive experience as an offset pressman. His understanding of the mechanics and chemistry of printing (e.g., special inks) meant that he was able to control fine details of this work.
