International Grassroots Artists Exchanges in the United States
(Developed by the Cincinnati Studio Artists group, presented by Jan Brown Checco, director)
Relationships can grow out of a traveling artist's friendly intentions, and individual initiative can be a powerful tool in community building. With some simple ground rules, you can attract international cultural exchange to your hometown. While this kind of exchange can begin with very casual, even accidental beginnings, it eventually needs to be businesslike in its organization. While founding a new artists exchange program, here are some points the Cincinnati Studio Artists Group has learned to consider:
- Identification of the best candidates for exchanges
- Expectations of returns for your time and effort
- Specific plans for building an exchange program
- Creation of a business-like identity for your program
- Connection with a non-profit fiscal agent partner, such as the Sister Cities Association
- Seeking grants that support artists' travel/study programs
To receive the four-page outline for creating a Grassroots Artists Exchange program, request at: jbcfas@one.net
