CFP "Between Two Worlds: Syncretism and Alterity in Art" 21st Annual Symposium

Type: Calls For Papers [View all]
Posted by: San Jose State University
Deadline: Tue, February 17th, 2015

April 18, 2015 at SJSU

We are undeniably defined by an amalgamation of experiences. This symposium seeks to discuss the dichotomies in art and art practice that highlight a comparative exchange of culture and ideas. Whether acting in harmony or struggling to unite, art reflects this evolutionary and artistic process.

Possible topics: identity, sexuality, gender boundaries, global exploration, material culture, religion, cultural and social issues, conflict, colonialism, image of the "other," exoticism, hybridity, the Silk Road, orientalism, japonisme, chinoiserie, imperialism, or simulacrum. We invite students to explore all time periods, cultures, themes, and areas of art history, visual culture, and interdisciplinary topics.

Submissions must include a 300-word abstract, title of proposed lecture, affiliation, brief recommendation from advising professor, condensed CV and a 1-paragraph bio.
