Into the Sun: Light and Atmospherics of the American West, Visual Studies PhD Program 2017 Graduate Conference, UC Irvine
April 27, 2017
Light characterizes both the imagined mythologies and lived realities of the American West. Since the late nineteenth century, filmmakers, artists, writers, and researchers of all types have gravitated to the western states, specifically for the particular quality of light experienced in this region. As both a physical and a conceptual phenomenon, light opens up creative spaces for artistic practices and interdisciplinary research. This graduate conference invites submissions that explore light and atmospherics in the American West with respect to aesthetics, political economy, social politics, technology, ecology, political geographies, and urban studies. Please send a proposal of no longer than 300 words including the abstract, contact information, and a short bio. Submit abstracts and proposals to visualstudies.uci@gmail.com, by March 15, 2017.
