Art: Premodern, Modern, Postmodern, Bie-modern

Center for Chinese Bie-modern Studies at Georgia Southwestern State University

Institute of Aesthetics and Aesthetic Education at Shanghai Normal University

October 5-8 Americus Georgia

October 8-12 Atlanta Georgia (Chinese delegation)

With the development of globalization and localization, the relationship between art and its historical context is receiving renewed attention from a field of scholars.  The description of premodern, modern and postmodern art may not be satisfactory when describing the motivation and influences of some contemporary Chinese art that has been identified as “Bie-modern art” or a hybrid form of art developing from within Chinese Society.   This form of contemporary art though responding to the development of western art is rooted in a different socio-historical context which has resulted in attempts at a more appropriate theoretical approach.   If so, what is the “Bie-modern”?  What is the relationship between the Bie-modern and pre-modern, modern and postmodern frames?  How does this impact art and aesthetics?

The Center for Chinese Bie-modern Studies (CCBMS) of Georgia Southwestern State University, in collaboration with the Institute of Aesthetics and Aesthetic Education of Shanghai Normal University, will host an International Symposium.  The Symposium will be held on Oct 5-8 in Americus Georgia for conference reports and Oct. 9-12 in Atlanta for Chinese scholars who will meet to discuss American contemporary art. We are calling for papers that attempt to discuss this theme of the Bie-modern in the arts and a variety of disciplines.   The concept of Bie-modern can be applied to a variety of disciplines and not merely art and aesthetics.   Paper proposals are encouraged from all disciplines.
