Call for Artists - Work about Race & Identity

Type: Exhibition Opportunities [View all]
Posted by: LH Horton Jr Gallery, San Joaquin Delta College
Deadline: Thu, October 5th, 2017

A Conversation on Race and Identity
February 22 – March 16, 2018
Curated by Jan Marlese

The exhibition will present works that examine the personal and social impact of race/ethnicity on identity perception. Artists’ work may explore identity from a personal, introspective point of view or by focusing on socially constructed ideas of race and identity, from colorism to ethnic stereotyping. LH Horton Jr Gallery seeks to present works that are racially and socially diverse in representation and broad in perspective. The exhibition will be accompanied by the Delta Drama performance of Baltimore, written by Kirsten Greenidge, and directed by San Joaquin Delta College Professor, Greg Foro.

Eligibility: Entry is open to artists residing in the United States, and working in any medium, including primarily 2D and 3D works, as well as limited installation, interactive works, and video screenings. This is intended to be a group exhibition of 10 to 12 artists.

Work Delivery: Artists are responsible for all delivery/shipping costs, as well as optional transit insurance, to and from the Gallery. Work must be delivered and received at the Gallery on February 8-9 or 11-12.

Exhibition Stipend: Artists selected for exhibition will receive a stipend of $100 to $400, depending on the location and amount of work to be delivered or shipped. Stipends will be negotiated at the time of selection.

Insurance: Every reasonable precaution will be taken with the handling of artwork shown at the LH Horton Jr Gallery, and will be insured against fire, theft, and other hazards while in the possession of the Gallery from the time of receipt through the exhibition. San Joaquin Delta College and the LH Horton Jr Gallery cannot be held responsible for damages to artwork during shipping, and therefore insurance will not cover artwork in transit. Artwork damaged while in the possession of the Gallery will be evaluated for reparability. If artwork
is deemed repairable, insurance claims will be based on the cost to repair artwork or the documented value, whichever is less in cost. If artwork is deemed irreparable, insurance claims will be based on the documented value of artwork.
