Purpose of RFP

The Todman Family Foundation and Lakeland Health are currently seeking proposals for a single, transformative work of art for installation within Lakeland Health’s new $160 million Medical Pavilion (Pavilion) under construction in St Joseph Michigan.

With this RFP, artists or artist-led teams’ world-wide are invited to present a concept for the design, creation, and installation of a permanent piece of public artwork in the Pavilion.

Public Art Intent & Goal

Southwest Michigan, the region that Lakeland serves, has a diverse population. It is both urban and rural. It comprises people of many racial and ethnic backgrounds, and national origins. The donors aim to select an artist and art concept that expresses notions of racial and ethnic equity and inclusion – that creates a welcoming and healing experience for all those who seek care at Lakeland.   The work should be inspirational, aspirational and convey a sense of social and racial healing of individuals and the community at large. Artists who are able to integrate themes related to “epigenetics” – the impact of environment on human health – are especially welcomed to submit proposals.

Background

Lakeland, located in Berrien County Michigan, is a health system nationally recognized for delivering exemplary patient experiences and clinical outcomes. Their team of over 4,000 diverse and highly trained professionals works together to provide excellent medical services at locations throughout southwest Michigan. More than 450 primary and specialty care physicians and other licensed providers from all over the world practice medicine at Lakeland Health, Berrien County’s largest employer. With a rich history that dates back to the 1800s, Lakeland is a not-for-profit, community-owned health system that today includes three hospitals, an outpatient surgery center, a regional cancer center, rehabilitation centers, 2 long-term care residences, home care and hospice services, and 34 affiliate physician practice locations. The hospitals of Lakeland have always offered essential healthcare services to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. Lakeland continually works to create an integrated system of care that is accessible, affordable, compassionate, and responsible.

The Pavilion is a new addition to the Lakeland Medical Center located at 1234 Napier Ave, St Joseph Michigan, the flagship facility of Lakeland Health. The project is led by the architectural firm of Smith Group JJR, Chicago, IL. Plans call for state of the art surgical and medical suites, a short stay unit, imaging centers, an intensive care unit, and education and community rooms. A new main entrance will focus on visitor amenities including areas designated for healthy living and outreach programs.

Eligibility

Professional artists or artist teams world-wide, working in any medium, are invited to apply. Artists submitting proposals for this RFP shall be at least 18 years of age, and must have successfully managed and completed at least one commission project with a budget equal to or greater than $30,000 (including design development, documentation, finish product delivery and installation).

Budget

An all-inclusive not to exceed budget of $100,000 is available for this project. This amount represents all professional services and deliverables related to the artwork, including but not limited to the artist’s labor, consultants, travel, transportation, materials, installation, storage, documentation, studio overhead, insurance, and participation in a public event related to the artwork.

Proposal Content

Responding artists will need to research the commission and submit a letter of interest that explains what interests them about this project and demonstrate their understanding of the intent and goals of Lakeland for the artwork.

Responding artists must submit a full project proposal including a fully conceived idea along with enough additional information including but not limited to drawings, sketches, photographs, maquettes and any other graphic and written description which will help with the evaluation of the work.

An all-inclusive detailed budget must be presented in the proposal.

Responding artists should also submit a resume and portfolio examples of previous completed work along with three professional references.

Opportunities for Artwork Placement
