ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAM
The Artist Residency Program is designed to offer time and space for craft artists to focus on their creative work and interact with the public. The program supports emerging, mid-career, and established artists working in all craft media, including but not limited to clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood and mixed media. Museum visitors have the unique opportunity to visit the artists’ studios and watch the artists at work. Interacting with the resident artists is a great way to learn about a range of craft processes and techniques. In turn, the artists receive a unique opportunity to gain exposure, make connections with the Houston community, and help educate the public about craft.
A juried selection is held annually to award five artists a three-to-twelve-month residency. Artists selected for the program receive a 200-square-foot studio, a monthly stipend and a small, quarterly housing/materials allowance. The studios are equipped with sinks, telephones and wireless Internet access. Artists are selected based on the quality of their creative work, ability to interact with the public, career direction, and program diversity.
In addition to the benefits listed above, artists have access to a wide variety of resources and opportunities, including teaching assignments through HCCC and collaborative works with fellow residents. During their time as residents, artists’ creative work is represented by HCCC and is considered for display in the Asher Sales Gallery. To support artistic development, the program offers additional opportunities such as discussions with curators and gallery owners, exposure at HCCC events, and interactions with visiting art professionals.
Access to wide variety of professional opportunities and resources!
· Five to ten residencies awarded
· Three, six, nine or twelve-month residencies
· Stipend & modest housing allowance
· Free studio space with 24hr access
· Ongoing professional development
Applicants must be able to fulfill a program requirement of working in their studios for two days per week during HCCC public hours. All resident artists are required to open their studios to public interaction on Saturdays and one other day of the week (TBD), as well as during exhibition openings and specific educational programs on the evenings and weekends. Applicants should consider the public-facing nature of the residencies and the fact that a major goal of the program is to provide visitors with an opportunity to explore contemporary craft through engaging with working artists.
Benefits of the residency include 24/7 access to studio space, cultural and professional development opportunities, a monthly stipend that includes a small housing/materials allowance, and the opportunity to give an artist talk.
