About the artist:

Chitra Ramanathan is an established visual artist whose specialization is conceptual abstract painting. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with honors in 1993 and M.B.A in Art Museum Administration and Human Resources in 1997 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

While completing her B.FA, opportunities to exhibit in solo and group exhibitions came calling, with a solo exhibition at the ARC Gallery/Educational foundation, Chicago followed by various solo and group exhibits on Broadway, New York’s SoHo gallery district. The shows attracted reviews by art critics, launching her career as a professional artist. Since then Chitra Ramanathan has held a steady exhibition record and has developed a distinguished body of work. Academic recognitions for her work include a paid Visiting Artist invitation to the Royal Academy of Arts, London, UK in 2005 where she presented a talk on her thematic body of work, along with student critiques at the Royal Academy Schools.

As a member of CAA, Chitra Ramanathan served in the Services to Artists Committee and Committee on Diversity Practices from 2004-2007, and 2007-2010 respectively.

Ramanathan’s colorful conceptual paintings are created mostly in acrylics and mixed media and the majority are large-scale (unless smaller size restrictions are requested) making them ideally suited for public venues. Her canvases are treated with fresh bright colors and intricately interwoven texture materials executed with rapid brush strokes. Since Ramanathan’s initial introduction to the professional art world, several of her original paintings have been acquired by businesses, private collections and art auctions both within the U.S and in Europe.

Corporations and educational institutions have also commissioned the artist to create work as art in public places. Public art installations include invitations to complete site-specific work including a commission by MGM Resorts International to create a pair of large-scale, signed paintings based on Chitra Ramanathan’s earlier works that have been permanently installed inside the Bellagio Conservatory at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas since 2004; a 13.8 ft. wide wall mural commissioned by Crooked Creek Elementary School, Indianapolis; five large-scale paintings created for display in downtown Indianapolis in 2006 as part of the public art initiative by the Arts Council of Indianapolis as examples.

Concurrently an art educator, she has taught courses and workshops in abstract, mixed media and acrylic painting since 2004, currently faculty at the Art School of the Vero Beach Museum of Art, Florida since 2011. Prior, she taught courses and workshops as faculty at the Indianapolis Art Center from 2004-2010.

The artist’s paintings and biography have been featured in various magazine and book publications, collectively including Askart.com, the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), International Contemporary Artists, Vol 1. available on Amazon.com, the Indianapolis Business Journal, and Luxury Real Estate Magazine among others.
