Type: Internships [View all]
Posted by: Asheville Art Museum
Deadline: Thu, March 1st, 2018

Department: Curatorial Internship for Museum Diversity

Semester: Summer 2018

Academic standing: Current or post-graduate student preferred; recent graduates or advanced undergraduates may be considered

Major(s): Art history (American art), American history, craft history, interdisciplinary studies, women’s and gender studies, or related field

Primary purpose: To assist Curatorial staff with projects related to the reinstallation, reinterpretation, and production of a catalogue of the Permanent Collection.

Essential functions: In 2016, the Museum launched a major renovation and construction project. Lasting approximately 18 to 24 months, the project will radically transform the interiors of the Museum’s North and East Wings, rebuild the Atrium, add a new suite of galleries, and provide a revitalized backdrop for how the Museum interacts with its patrons and visitors. Read more about our construction project.

The Henry Luce Foundation awarded the Museum a prestigious two-year American Art program grant to support the reinstallation, reinterpretation, and production of the first catalogue of the Permanent Collection. The Curatorial Internship for Museum Diversity, supported by the grant, broadens opportunities for students who are passionate about a career in the arts and whose backgrounds or experiences are underrepresented in the museum field. The intern will gain valuable professional experience by working alongside staff in the Curatorial and Education Departments to:

     · Research objects in the Museum’s Permanent Collection of American art, which spans from the late 19th century to the present with emphases on artworks important to Western North Carolina/Southern Appalachia, Black Mountain College, Cherokee, and fine studio craft

     · Assist with the production of object labels, catalogue entries, artist biographies and artist interviews for the new Permanent Collection galleries, Museum website, and educational media

     · Expand resources in the Museum’s artist files

     · Contribute ideas for the reinterpretation of the Permanent Collection

     · Gain experience in collections management, exhibition development, museum publications, art-handling, and museum education

Work station: Asheville Art Museum On the Slope intern/volunteer computers, offsite if needed

Schedule: TBD with Museum staff, approximately 320 total hours (40 hours/week × 8 weeks, May – August 2018)

Compensation: $3600 stipend

Application instructions/deadline: No later than March 1, 2018, candidates should submit all required application materials for an internship at the Asheville Art Museum (more information at www.ashevilleart.org/education/get-involved/internship-program/) as well as include the following additional information in their letter of interest:

     2. Describe how their academic/research interests align with the Museum’s Permanent Collection (http://www.ashevilleart.org/collections/)

     3. Highlight specific artists/artworks in the Permanent Collection that relate to their academic/research interests

     4. Describe how the Curatorial Internship for Museum Diversity will help them further their goals towards a career in the museum field
