Making Architecture

Type: Residencies, Workshops, Exchanges [View all]
Posted by: California College of the Arts
Deadline: Fri, March 16th, 2018

Making Architecture is a full-time summer program for college students, recent graduates, inspired professionals, international applicants, and career-changers considering graduate education or a career in architecture.

Under the guidance of California College of the Arts Architecture faculty, students participate in an intensive design studio that introduces techniques and skills in drawing, model-making, and critical thinking that are central to architectural design. Students benefit from CCA Architecture’s signature expertise in technological innovation, digital craft, and creative experimentation with exposure to cutting-edge technologies of 3d modeling, digital fabrication, and robotic drawing. No previous architectural experience is required—just an adventurous outlook, a desire to challenge yourself, and a passion for making.

Making Architecture students can expect to complete a body of work that will help propel them into the next stage of their architectural careers—work that demonstrates both competency with basic principles of architectural design and an understanding of the latest experimental techniques of design and fabrication. CCA awards 3 undergraduate credits, a transcript, and a letter grade upon successful completion of the program.

The dynamic context of San Francisco and the Bay Area serves as a laboratory for creativity and innovation. The program features a series of guest lectures by CCA faculty and principals at local design firms (past guests included Andrew Kudless of Matsys, Janette Kim of All of the Above, and Clark Thenhaus of Endemic), in addition to portfolio workshops, field trips to notable architectural landmarks, and visits to some of the top design firms and maker spaces in San Francisco, such as Future Cities Lab, Iwamoto Scott, and Autodesk’s Pier 9 Workshop.

Housing is available for early applicants.

Making Architecture runs for four weeks, Monday through Friday. Mornings typically consist of workshops, field trips, and site visits, while afternoons take place in the design studio with direction from CCA faculty. 2018 schedule coming soon. See this link for the summer 2016 schedule.

For international applicants, Making Architecture is an ideal way to participate in an intensive design studio while experiencing American academic life.
