Call to Artists: Art and Fear, A National Juried Exhibit

Type: Exhibition Opportunities [View all]
Posted by: Arts Council of Southeast Missouri
Deadline: Sat, April 14th, 2018

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri is now accepting submissions for the 2018 National Juried Exhibition, titled ART AND FEAR. Each piece must interpret this year’s theme, which will include elements that trigger our fears, anxieties, or phobias. Being a national juried show, ART AND FEAR will showcase original artwork made by artists from all across the United States. Artists must be at least 18 years old and currently residing in the United States to enter.

Being afraid, sometimes seemingly irrational, is an important dimension of our emotional lives. Everyone has something that scares them. Spiders, snakes, heights – but what about ablutophobia (fear of washing or bathing), or consecotaleophobia (fear of chopsticks)? Art and Fear beckons artists across the United States to submit work that explores the concept of fear, anxiety, and phobias. Fear is a fluctuating entity, and can mean many different things to different people. The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri encourages the exploration and interpretation of this idea in a way that is particular and personal to each artist.

This year’s juror will be Marcus J. Howell. Marcus Howell is an artist from the Midwest, and is currently an Associate Professor and the Area Head of Printmaking at Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. The content of Howell’s work centers around the inherent absurdity of the political and social constructs that run people’s lives, and the great cost those structures exact on the individual and his or her environment. Marcus received his B.F.A. in Design, with an emphasis in image production, from Southwest Missouri State and his M.F.A. in Printmaking from the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign. Marcus has had work featured in Juxtapoz Magazine. His work has also been included in over 70 National and International juried exhibitions.

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri sought out Mr. Howell to jury this particular exhibit because of the raw, uncensored nature of his work and its ability to yield a feeling of discomfort and distress in the viewer.

The non-refundable entry fee for the 2018 National Juried Exhibition is $35 for non-Arts Council members and $30 for members. Each additional entry after the first three will be $5. There is no maximum number of entries, but no more than three works by any artist will be exhibited. Diptycs and triptychs will be considered as two or three entries.

The deadline for entries is Saturday April 14, 2018. The opening reception for the show will be held on Friday, June 1 from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. ART AND FEAR will remain on display for two months, and will come down on July 28, 2018.

Entries will be accepted in the form of JPEG images on a CD, or via the online entry form. For mailed entries, please include: Entry Fee (payable to the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri), completed entry form, CD with images, and self-adressed return envelope. Mail to:
