An annual conference exploring the history and legacy of Black Mountain College

Thematic Focus: Black Mountain College Summer Art + Music Institutes

The 10th Annual ReVIEWING Black Mountain College conference will have a thematic focus on the legendary Black Mountain College Summer Art + Music Institutes, however proposals on any theme related to Black Mountain College and its legacy are encouraged and will be considered. Furthermore, in the spirit of BMC, the conference challenges disciplinary boundaries, and therefore performances, multi-media panel proposals, and workshops are welcome. Please submit proposals to Brian Butler (bbutler@unca.edu) and Alice Sebrell (alice@blackmountaincollege.org) by July 1, 2018. Notification will be made by July 8, 2018. The conference will take place in Asheville, NC, September 28-30, 2018. 

•  Keynote speaker: Dr. Leslie King Hammond, an artist, curator, art historian, and Founding Director of the Center for Race and Culture at the Maryland Institute College of Art, where she is also Graduate Dean Emeritus. Dr. King Hammond was a contributor to Over the Line: The Art and Life of Jacob Lawrence (2000) and Jacob Lawrence, An Overview: Paintings from 1936-1994 (1995). Among many honors and awards, she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Studio Museum in Harlem (NYC) in 2002, an artist grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2001, an Andy Warhol Foundation Curatorial fellowship in 2008, and the Alain Locke International Prize in 2010. Her keynote address is titled "The World of Jacob Lawrence".

•   In conjunction with the 10th Annual ReVIEWING BMC conference, Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center will open its new location at 120 College St. in downtown Asheville, NC on Pack Square Park.  

•  On Friday, September 28th, following the conference keynote by Leslie King Hammond, we will celebrate the exhibition Between Form + Content: Perspectives on Jacob Lawrence and Black Mountain College, co-curated by Dr. Julie Levin Caro, Professor of Art History at Warren Wilson College and Jeff Arnal, Executive Director of Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, with a reception at the museum.
