The Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio of Cedar Rapids, Iowa is pleased to host the fourth bi-annual Iowa Clay Conference. Participation is open to all artists 18 years of age or older living in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota. Work submitted must be original, must use clay as the primary material and must have been completed within the last 2 years.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION JURORS:

Mitchell Spain: Born and raised near Des Moines IA, Spain received his BFA in Ceramics in 2012 from the University of Iowa and his MFA at the University of Kansas in 2015. Today, he is an accomplished artist crafting high-quality ceramic works using trompe l’oeil technique that mimics these rustic findings. Mitchell has exhibited in national and international exhibitions including the Zanesville Prize for Contemporary Ceramics. His work and writing have been featured in national ceramics publications including Ceramics Monthly and Ceramics: TECHNICAL magazine. He currently lives south of Des Moines, Iowa where he is working as a full-time studio artist.

Clary Illian: An Iowa native, Illian apprenticed with Bernard Leach in 1964-65 upon receiving her BFA from the University of Iowa. She has made a living as a full-time utilitarian potter and currently resides in Ely, Iowa. She has taught a few semesters and workshops in art schools and craft teaching institutions across the United States and Canada. Clary is also well-known for her writing, authoring numerous articles for various ceramic publications, including Studio Potter. Her text, “A Potter’s Workbook” was published in 1999 and is used in classrooms around the world. After a long career making stoneware and porcelain pots, Ms. Illian recently switched to earthenware and sees her work becoming more light-hearted, but keeping the functional intention intact.
