Leonard A. Lauder Fellowships in Modern Art

Type: Awards, Grants, Fellowships [View all]
Posted by: The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Deadline: Fri, November 2nd, 2018

Founded in April 2013, the Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art is a leading center for scholarship on modern art. The first such institution dedicated exclusively to the study of modernism within an encyclopedic museum, the Research Center makes critical contributions to the field through its fellowships and its robust program of lectures, workshops, exhibitions, publications, and research projects. While maintaining a special focus on the study of Cubism and its enduring impact, the Research Center encourages new directions in the broader field of modernism.

Each year, The Metropolitan Museum of Art offers two fellowships in the Research Center. One two-year position is intended for a predoctoral candidate who is embarking on his or her dissertation; the other fellowship is reserved for a qualified postdoctoral scholar at any stage of his or her career and may be one or two years in duration. Recent fellowships have supported the work of scholars focused on Surrealism, Dada, Latin American modernism, interwar European abstraction, Russian Constructivism, in addition to the agents, dealers, and reception of Cubism.

All predoctoral fellowships must take place between September 1, 2019 and August 31, 2021. All postdoctoral fellowships must take place between September 1, 2019 and (depending on the length of the fellowship) August 31, 2020 or 2021. The stipend amount for one year is $45,000 for predoctoral fellows and $55,000 for postdoctoral fellows. During the fellowship period and at the Museum’s discretion, Leonard A. Lauder Fellows will also be eligible to receive one or more travel stipends.

Leonard A. Lauder Fellows are expected to contribute to the activities and programming of the Research Center, as well as the gatherings organized by the Museum’s Education Department.
