Call for Submissions

The last year has seen the publication of Trap Door: Trans Cultural Production and the Politics of Visibility (Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 2017), the exhibition Trigger: Gender as a Tool and Weapon and the first exclusively trans-focused panel at College Art Association (co-chaired by us, Cyle Metzger and Kirstin Ringelberg). As editors of a themed issue of the Journal of Visual Culture that focuses on transgender visual cultures, we are looking to build on the work done by these discursive events and expand the archive of materials that constitute trans and non-binary art history and visual culture. We are looking for contributions that will help grow the visual and material archives of trans cultural production by introducing readers to previously unknown images, objects, movements, and producers and addressing specific experiences of complex gender identity from a greater variety of geographic, religious, political, and historical contexts.

Our current list of contributors is growing, with Susan Stryker, Kai M. Green, Chris Straayer, Stamatina Gregory, Eliza Steinbock, Stephanie Kang, Robb Hernandez, KJ Cerankowski, K.J. Rawson, and Cole Rizki all pledging submissions to the volume.

We welcome articles (of approximately 5,000 words) that take on a specific theme, collection, or figure within trans visual history and culture as well as shorter case studies (of approximately 1000-2000 words) that introduce specific images, objects, movements, or producers that have not yet received the attention they deserve. You need not be an established scholar or transgender legend to participate—graduate students and new voices are encouraged, and all submissions will be read with enthusiasm. Please send your submission to us by April 1, 2019 at kringelberg@elon.edu and cmetzger@stanford.edu.
