VCUarts Fountainhead Fellowship - Craft/Material Studies

The VCUarts Fountainhead Fellowship in Craft/Material Studies is a 9-month residency for recent MFA graduates. Fellows are provided the opportunity to concentrate on their work, build community, gain valuable teaching experience, and participate in a vital, interdisciplinary, socially progressive community of artists at Virginia Commonwealth University. The Fountainhead Fellowship is a joint project of Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts, the Departments of Craft/Material Studies, Painting + Printmaking, and Sculpture + Extended Media as well as Fountainhead Development Services.   A grant awarded by the Charitable Windgate Foundation generously supports the Fountainhead Fellow stipend in the Department of Craft/Material Studies.

ELIGIBILITY

Artists working predominantly in one or more of the following media areas: fiber, metal, or wood.
Artists possessing a strong foundation and understanding of their chosen material while working in innovative ways. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to teach beginner through advanced undergraduate studio classes that incorporate strong conceptual and technical skill building.
All MFA graduates who have graduated within the last 5 years are invited to apply. If you graduated prior to Fall 2014, you are not eligible to apply.
VCU MFA students and graduates are not eligible to apply.

THE FELLOWSHIP RECIPIENT RECEIVES

$16,000 stipend
Research/travel stipend
24-hour access to a private studio
A furnished apartment located in a newly renovated complex built to eco-friendly, EarthCraft standards. This mixed-use community includes artists’ studios, apartments, a café, an outdoor swimming pool, a dog park and other amenities.
Teaching experience (teach two classes per semester)
An exhibition in Richmond
Opportunity to present a public lecture

List of skills in your media
Unofficial graduate school transcript (an official transcript required for final candidate)
Contact information for two references (include name, title, email, phone number)
Portfolio – 20 images and documentation script (all within a single PDF file no larger than 2MB)
Examples of student work - 10 images
Contact information for three references (include name, title, email, phone number). References for finalists will be contacted for a phone interview about the candidates qualifications.

DELIVERY INSTRUCTIONS

Applicants will send one email with two pdfs to crafts@vcu.edu (Subject line “Fountainhead Fellow Application”)

First pdf must include:
