The primary role of the Windgate Intern at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center will be to assist the Arts/Industry assistant curator in all matters pertaining to an exhibition for 2020 that will be drawn from our renowned Arts/Industry collection. This collection includes forty-years-worth of creativity from hundreds of artists-in-residence who were selected to produce innovative work in the Kohler Foundry and Pottery. Under the direction of the Arts/Industry Program Manager and Curator, the intern will undertake tasks that are scholarly, creative, and administrative in nature. Other, more general duties are also expected, including but not limited to:
Conduct primary research on collection pieces
Assist with the writing of exhibition didactics
Assist with answering general inquiries and requests for curatorial staff
Assist in processing audiovisual requests, photo rights, and reproduction related to exhibitions and the collection
Qualifications: The candidate for this internship should be a recent graduate of (or currently enrolled in) a Master’s degree program in either art history, museum studies, or a related field. The successful candidate will exhibit strong research skills; be highly organized and a problem solver; demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, including good oral and written communication; have some knowledge of current museum practices, museum permanent collections, and object handling and care; and demonstrate a record that reflects an interest in contemporary craft, artist-built environments and self-taught art.
The Windgate internship entails:
20–40 hours a week
$10 per hour, maximum of 460 hours
Internship hours are required to be completed between May 1 and October 31, 2019
Students may arrange academic credit through their school
Does not include housing
