Every few hours sirens sound throughout Huntsville, Texas, to signal the beginning and end of inmate head-counts. These sirens are just one of the persistent background signs of the seven prisons in Huntsville: Byrd Unit, Ellis Unit, Goree Unit, Holliday Transfer Facility, Huntsville Unit, Walker County Jail, and Wynne Unit. The Huntsville Unit, also known as the Walls Unit, houses the most active execution chamber in the United States, was home to “Old Sparky”, and is located in the middle of town. 

For this national and international open call, Lease Agreement seeks moving-image works by artists and directors that speak to the realities and experiences related of incarceration and specifically request pieces that address prison justice and capital punishment. This screening, Walls, will be held on April 29th at the 12th Street Bar, which is located two blocks south of the Walls Unit.

Artists and filmmakers who are 18 or older are eligible. Submissions are open to the public and free. Works will be submitted via video hosting sites such as Youtube or Vimeo, personal websites, or gallery sites. Hard copies will not be reviewed. We unfortunately cannot accommodate film submissions at this time.

Lease Agreement is an artist-run nomadic curatorial project directed by Adam Farcus. The 12th Street Screening series is a Lease Agreement project that occurs every last Monday of the month. The screening series is hosted by the 12th Street Bar in downtown Huntsville, Texas. The screenings are free and +21. Screenings are promoted regionally and locally by Lease Agreement and 12th Street Bar. An archive of past screenings and events is kept on the Lease Agreement website: www.leaseagreementgallery.com. Lease Agreement and 12th Street Bar do not offer any financial assistance.

Deadline for submission is April 8, 2019, at 11:59 CT.

• CV/s including contact information (as attached PDF/s)
• Submission list including: title, video length, date, and any necessary descriptive information (within email or attached as PDF)

Notifications will be sent via email by April 12. Selected pieces will need to be sent digitally.
