The University of Kansas Residency in Art at the Intersection of Science

Visual artists whose studio practice lies at the intersection of visual art and earth, energy and environmental sciences are invited to apply for this Post MFA residency.  The resident will work with University of Kansas’ Earth, Energy and Environment Center and the Department of Visual Art and is expected to interreact with the students and faculty in the departments of Visual Art, Geoscience, and Engineering.  The successful candidate will teach one course per semester in the Department of Visual Art.  The residency may culminate with a solo exhibition or equivalent outcome in the Art and Design Gallery and/or the Earth Energy and Environment Center.

Collaboration between the arts and sciences is a way to re-imagine and re-contextualize the scope and impact both fields can have on contemporary culture. Interdisciplinarity  generates new ideas and provides new perspectives at a moment in our culture when it is vital to refresh traditional modes of discourse. Can art influence science, as science often influences art? Can the laboratory and the studio be spaces of unlimited and linked inquiry? Can empirical and data driven fields yield visual content and poetry, and can visual innovation and intuition lead to scientific and/or technological discovery? These are some of the many questions that the successful candidate for the Residency in Art at the Intersection of Science will be expected to engage. The form, process, and result of each resident’s studio practice is entirely up to them though process and projects will be documented online through the resident’s blogs.
