“What’s your story? It’s all in the telling. Stories are compasses and architecture; we navigate by them, we build our sanctuaries and our prisons out of them, and to be without a story is to be lost in the vastness of a world that spreads in all directions like arctic tundra or sea ice.”

 – Rebecca Solnit, The Faraway Nearby

Climate is a national call for artwork of any media that explores the open-ended possibilities associated with ideation and it’s relationship to medium. For this call, we are seeking artwork revealing stories of surroundings and the evolving circumstances of our geography. Human interactions with the environment can be subtle, significant, temporary, and lasting forming a paradox that can in some cases cannot be solved or erased. This exhibit will survey current creative engagement of spatial and temporal visual ideas by juxtaposing fragments of images, objects, ideas, and forms surrounding the larger theme of climate.

This call is open to everyone 18 years or older and is open to all media. Submissions can range from traditional to conceptual. Climate will be on view at (SCENE) Metrospace, an urban gallery in East Lansing, MI from July 12 - August 30, 2019. The only required criteria is that works must engage with the theme of climate, all works of art must be made by visual artists living in the United States.

Located in downtown East Lansing, MI, (SCENE) Metrospace was founded by the City of East Lansing in 2004, and continues to be operated by the Department of Art, Art History, and Design at Michigan State University. (SCENE) Metrospace has maintained a diverse range of visual art exhibitions, musical performances, and other forms of expression since it’s opening in 2004. In 2015 the City of East Lansing and Michigan State University joined forces to program and operate the space. (SCENE) Metrospace hosts exhibitions featuring work by contemporary artists.

(SCENE) Metrospace is free and open to the public, with the exception of some special programing. The gallery is handicap accessible and offers 1,500 square feet of raw exhibition space in a contemporary urban setting.
