The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (KIA) is hosting a symposium on the Bay Area Figurative Movement, its participants, and their significant impact on American Art to be held in Kalamazoo, Michigan in March 2020. We invite submissions for presentations that highlight emerging scholarship on the Bay Area Figurative Movement and its practitioners, especially artist David Park. Speakers will receive an honorarium, as well as support to defray the costs of attending, including travel, lodging, and meals.
The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts is an AAM accredited art museum with a collection of over 5000 objects, and the Kirk Newman Art School. From December 21, 2019 to March 15, 2020, the KIA will host David Park: A Retrospective. Organized by San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the exhibition will feature almost 100 paintings and drawings spanning the artist’s career. It is the first significant retrospective of Park’s work in over 30 years. The KIA will be the only midwest venue for the exhibition.
The deadline for abstract submissions is September 30, 2019. Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words and should be sent, along with a current copy of your CV, to Michelle Stempien, Director of Museum Education via email: michelles@kiarts.org.
Applicants can expect to be notified of the status of their submission by November 15, 2019.
