Call for Applicants: Indigenous Artist’s Six-Month Residency at ISCP, New York

July 1 – December 31, 2020 

ISCP invites professional artists who are First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples to apply for a six-month residency at the International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York City. This residency will support the development of an Indigenous artist, expand discourses on Indigenous art, and foster deeper international collaboration with New York City and Indigenous artistic communities. This call is open only to Indigenous contemporary artists with Canadian passports, working in all mediums. 

ISCP’s international residency program benefits include: 24-hour access to a private 300 sq. ft. furnished studio space; regular studio visits from visiting critics; field trips to museums, galleries and other cultural venues; and participation in artist talks and Open Studios events. Residents are also invited to take part in ISCP’s exhibition program and offsite projects. 

Pending full acceptance by ISCP, the applicant is encouraged to apply for funding for ISCP’s participation fee for six months to be fully covered, and additional allocations to cover individual travel and living expenses in New York City will also be awarded to the successful applicant. Applicants may seek additional support for an onsite or offsite exhibition project, to be developed while in residence, which will further the awareness and impact of contemporary Indigenous art in New York City.

 

Application Process

Application to ISCP. Please submit the following to application@iscp-nyc.org by August 20, 2019 indicating “Indigenous Artist’s Residency” in the subject line. Applicants must provide the following information: name, date of birth, place of birth, mailing address, telephone number, and email address in the Application Form (link to the application form here).

 

a. Please enclose the following materials in your application:

    curriculum vitae: 5 pages max.
    work samples: this should include 10 images or video links with a caption (title, date, medium, and dimensions / duration for each work) and a description of each work
    2 – 3 scanned copies of reviews (if applicable): 10 pages max.
    scanned copies of catalogs (if applicable): pages that feature your work only
    reference letter
    second reference contact information: please include name, title, institution, email, telephone, and address (different referee from above, contact information only)
    brief project description (500 words max)
    scanned copy of Canadian Passport

ELIGIBILITY: Visual artists who are First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in all visual arts disciplines are invited to apply. Applicants may not be ISCP alumni or residents in another studio program at the same time as the Indigenous Artist’s Residency.

SELECTION: The selection committee of ISCP reviews applications based on quality, originality and artistic merit. Other consideration factors are: the potential impact of the residency on the applicant, the applicant’s past accomplishments, and preparedness to undertake the residency. Interviews with the most promising candidates will be held by the selection committee.

Selected applicants are encouraged to work with ISCP staff to secure funding support for residency costs.
