Posted by: University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Deadline: Wed, January 15th, 2020

The School of Art at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites you to apply for our Master of Fine Arts program in Studio Art. Our three-year graduate degree offers concentrations in Ceramics, Painting + Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, and Time-Based Art. The school’s MFA degree is ranked 33rd nationally (15th public) by US News and World Report, and our Printmaking concentration is ranked 2nd nationally.

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is classified as a Doctoral/Research Extensive institution by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Our students are taught by internationally known faculty who conduct a high level of research and creative activity. With an almost one-to-one faculty, student ratio, graduate students are able to receive a mentorship relationship with our faculty. In order to provide our students and the Knoxville community with a diverse knowledge of art outside our region, the School of Art brings in vibrant, diverse visiting artists as a part of our lecture series. We also have an established, semester-long Artist-in-Residence program, which enriches the student experience further by regularly bringing new artists from outside the university who are active in the contemporary gallery and museum arenas.

Our three university-affiliated galleries serve as cultural resources for students and the community to learn and discover historical and contemporary movements in art. The Ewing Gallery of Art + Architecture is located within our facilities on campus, the UT Downtown Gallery is located in the heart of downtown Knoxville, and Gallery 1010 is an off-campus, student-run exhibition space.

Applicants are considered for Graduate Teaching Assistantships which includes a full tuition waiver, stipend, and health benefits. Candidates can also be nominated for additional fellowships. In the spring, graduate students are eligible to apply for scholarships, awards, and grants to support projects, study abroad, and materials. In addition to financial assistance, MFA students are provided with studio space on UT’s campus.

Knoxville is home to an active art and music scene. Our Arts District, along Gay Street and the 100 Block, is a popular location for numerous First Friday celebrations highlighting local arts each month. We are located in the valley of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. From exciting downhill single-track trails to serene quarry lakes, bubbling mountain streams, or impressive rock outcrops, Knoxville’s varied and inspiring landscapes offer the perfect spot for any type of outdoor adventure.
