Kala Art Institute provides Media Arts Residency Awardees with a six-month residency with 24/7 access to Kala’s facilities, along with the opportunity to produce work in collaboration with Kala programs, a culminating exhibition in the Kala gallery, and in-house expertise for the duration of the residency. Artists working in and across video, sound, performance cinema, and installation will continue this program into its fourth year, a creative residency at Kala to create multi-media projects that culminate in Kala programming.

Awarded artists will have access to both Kala’s Digital Art Lab and Print Studio. Kala’s media center provides computer suites loaded with software for image, video, and sound editing, cameras, projectors, zoom sound recorders, high-quality scanners, and large-scale printers.

A Full Application Includes:
-Completed Application Form
-Statement of Interest in working at Kala Art Institute and how a Media Award will affect a specific future project and/or how it will impact your overall practice.
-Artist CV
-Documentation of recent work (see specifications on the online application for guidelines according to discipline)
-Two References
-$25 Application Fee

2020 Competition
The 2020 Media Award competition will be juried by Kala’s Executive Director, Gallery Director, Artist Residency Manager, and a panel that includes Fellowship alumni artist Veronica Graham, and one invited Bay Area arts professional, Jovanna Venegas, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art, SFMOMA.  

Program Period
The 2020-2021 Fellowship residency period is October 1, 2020 through July 31, 2021. Artists must be able to schedule a 1 to 6 month residency during that time.

Please note:
– This is a studio residency only; housing is not included.
– Students who will be enrolled in a degree granting program in the 2020-2021 academic year are not eligible for the award.
