New Faces for CAA’s Publications

The president of the CAA Board of Directors, Suzanne Preston Blier, has confirmed new appointments to the editorial boards of CAA’s three scholarly journals and to the Publications Committee, in consultation with the vice president for publications, Gail Feigenbaum.

The Art Bulletin

A new member-at-large has joined the Art Bulletin Editorial Board. Laura Weigert is an associate professor at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, whose area of specialization is Northern European art of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. Her term on the editorial board runs through June 2020.

Art Journal

Three new at-large members have joined the Art Journal Editorial Board. Tatiana E. Flores, associate professor at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, with a joint appointment in the Department of Art History and the Department of Latino and Caribbean Studies, specializes in Latin American and contemporary art. She is also active as an independent curator. Amelia G. Jones, a historian and theorist of contemporary art and performance studies, is Robert A. Day Professor of Art and Design and vice dean of critical studies at the University of Southern California’s Roski School of Art and Design in California. Derek Conrad Murray, associate professor of contemporary art and visual culture at the University of California, Santa Cruz, focuses on the junctures of African American and African diasporic art, postblack art and aesthetics, cultural theory, and identity and representation. The term for each new editorial-board member goes through June 2020.

In addition, Tirza T. Latimer, chair of the graduate program in visual and critical studies at California College of the Arts in San Francisco and a member of the Art Journal Editorial Board since 2014, will now serve as its chair. Her term extends through June 2018.

caa.reviews

The caa.reviews Editorial Board welcomes Juliet Bellow, associate professor of art history at American University in Washington, DC, as editor designate for the journal. She will begin a three-year term as editor-in-chief on July 1, 2017. Bellow has been a field editor for books on nineteenth-century art and served on the journal’s editorial board for the past four years. Andrei Pop, associate professor for the Department of Art History and the John U. Nef Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has joined the caa.reviews Editorial Board after serving as field editor for books on theory and historiography.

caa.reviews recently added design history as a subject area, and Karen Carter, an associate professor from the Kendall College of Art and Design at Ferris State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, will be the first editor to commission books on the subject. In addition, Iris Moon, visiting assistant professor of architecture at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, has joined the journal’s Council of Field Editors to commission reviews for books on eighteenth-century art. Alpesh Kantilal Patel, assistant professor and director of the MFA program in visual arts at Florida International University in Miami, currently serves as field editor for books on contemporary art.

Publications Committee

Emily Shapiro has joined CAA’s Publications Committee as member-at-large for a term of three years. Shapiro is managing editor of the Archives of American Art Journal, after serving as executive editor for American Art.

2016–2017 Nominating Committee Members

CAA is pleased to announce the members of the 2016–2017 Nominating Committee, which is charged with identifying and interviewing potential candidates for the Board of Directors and selecting the final slate of candidates for the membership’s vote. CAA invites nominations and self-nominations for at-large members of the Annual Conference Committee to serve a three-year term, beginning on May 1, 2016. We welcome all members to participation in the nomination process.  Working with the Programs Department staff, this committee selects the sessions and shapes the program of the Annual Conference. The committee ensures that the program will reflect the goals of the association and of the Annual Conference, namely, to make the conference an effective place for intellectual, aesthetic, and professional learning and exchange, and to provide opportunities for participation that are fair, equal, and balanced.

The Annual Conference Committee meets at least two times a year at the call of the vice president for Annual Conference and the committee’s chair. Members must be available throughout May and June to review and select 2017 conference content from the submitted proposals. Please send a 150-word letter of interest and a CV to Katie Apsey, CAA manager of programs. Deadline: April 15, 2016.

Serve on a CAA Award Jury

CAA invites nominations and self-nominations for individuals to serve on eight of the twelve juries for the annual Awards for Distinction for three years (2016–19). Terms begin in May 2016; award years are 2017–19. CAA’s twelve awards honor artists, art historians, authors, curators, critics, and teachers whose accomplishments transcend their individual disciplines and contribute to the profession as a whole and to the world at large.

Candidates must possess expertise appropriate to the jury’s work and be current CAA members. They should not hold a position on a CAA committee or editorial board beyond May 31, 2016. CAA’s president and vice president for committees appoint jury members for service.

Nominations and self-nominations should include a brief statement (no more than 150 words) outlining the individual’s qualifications and experience and an abbreviated CV (no more than two pages). CAA Seeks Publications Committee Member

CAA invites nominations and self-nominations for one member-at-large to serve on the CAA Publications Committee for a three-year term, July 1, 2016–June 30, 2019.

The Publications Committee is a consultative body that meets three times a year. It advises the CAA Publications Department staff and the CAA Board of Directors on publications projects and meets with chairs of the editorial boards of The Art Bulletin, Art Journal, and caa.reviews three times each year. The committee chooses candidates to serve on CAA’s book-grant juries; sponsors a practicum session at the Annual Conference; and, with the CAA vice president for publications, serves as liaison to the Board, membership, editorial boards, book-grant juries, and other CAA committees.

Each year the committee meets twice in New York and once at the CAA Annual Conference. Members pay their travel and lodging expenses to attend the annual conference meeting. Meetings in the spring and fall currently are held by teleconference. Members of all committees volunteer their services to CAA without compensation.

Candidates must be current CAA members and should serve concurrently on other CAA committees or editorial boards. Applicants may not be individuals who have served as members of a CAA editorial board within the past five years. Nominators should ascertain their nominee’s willingness to serve before submitting a name; self-nominations are also welcome. Appointments are made by the CAA president in consultation with the vice president for publications.

CAA Announces Formation of Committee on Design

Dear College Art Association Members:

In 2015, CAA established a Task Force on Design charged with suggesting positions the organization might adopt toward design, design studies, designers, design educators, historians, and theorists. The CAA Board of Directors is delighted to announce the approval of a new Committee on Design, approved during the recently concluded 2016 CAA Annual Conference.

The Committee will replace the Task Force and be among CAA’s ten standing Professional Interests, Practices, and Standards Committees. The Committee on Design will promote and advance issues in design practice, design history/theory/criticism, and design education through advocacy, engagement, and a commitment to the diversity of practices and practitioners. The committee will further support discussion and action in these areas to stimulate intellectual curiosity and advance skills that enrich the individual and society.

CAA invites members to apply for service on this inaugural Committee on Design. To apply, kindly forward a statement of interest (250 words or less) and a 3–4 page condensed résumé noting in the subject line Committee on Design to vjalet@collegeart.org. Initial application review begins on March 30, 2016, with appointments to two-year terms anticipated by May 1, 2016.

Until May 1, the Task Force on Design will continue work on revising CAA’s Standards and Guidelines for Retention and Tenure of Art and Design Faculty and seeks input from CAA members. Responses at your earliest convenience, and especially prior to March 15, 2016, are greatly appreciated as the Task Force wishes to complete this project for a May 2016 approval by the CAA Board of Directors.

CAA Appoints New Committee Members and Chairs

CAA’s nine Professional Interests, Practices, and Standards Committees welcome their newly appointed members, who will serve three-year terms (2016–19). In addition, two new chairs will take over committee leadership. New committee members and chairs began their terms at the 2016 Annual Conference in Washington, DC. CAA warmly thanks all outgoing committee members for their years of service to the organization.

A call for nominations for these committees appears annually from July to September in CAA News and on the CAA website. CAA’s president, vice president for committees, and executive director review all nominations in November and make appointments that take effect the following February. CAA’s vice president for committees is an ex officio member of all nine groups.

CAA invites you to help shape the future of the organization by serving on the 2016–2017 Nominating Committee. Each year, this committee nominates and interviews potential candidates for the CAA Board of Directors and selects the final slate for the membership’s vote. The candidates for the 2016 Board of Directors election were announced on October 13, 2015.

The Board of Directors and the Nominating Committee strive to find the best candidates that represent the broad subdisciplines and practitioners represented in the membership. The 2015–2016 Nominating Committee will select the members of the 2016–2017 committee at its business meeting, to be held at the 2016 Annual Conference in Washington, DC in February. Once selected as members of the 2016–2017 committee, all members must propose, in the spring, a minimum of five and a maximum of ten people for the board. Service on the committee also involves conducting telephone interviews with candidates during the summer of 2016, and meeting in the fall to select the final board slate. Finally, all Nominating Committee members attend their next business meeting, at the 2017 Annual Conference in New York to select the succeeding committee.

Nominations and self-nominations should include a brief statement of interest and a 3–4 page condensed CV. Students and emerging professionals have the opportunity to sign up for a twenty-minute practice job interview at the 2016 Annual Conference in Washington, DC. Organized by the Student and Emerging Professionals Committee, the Mock Interview Sessions give participants the chance to practice their interview skills one on one with a seasoned professional, improve their effectiveness during interviews, and hone their elevator speech. Interviewers also provide candid feedback on application packets.

Mock Interview Sessions are offered free of charge; you must be a CAA member to participate. Sessions are filled by appointment only and scheduled for Wednesday, February 3, 2:00–4:00 PM; Thursday, February 4, 11:00 AM–1:00 PM and 2:00–4:00 PM; and Friday, February 5, 9:00–11:00 AM.

To apply, complete the online Google Registration Form. You may enroll in one twenty-minute session. Conference registration, while encouraged, is not necessary to participate in the Mock Interview Sessions. Deadline: January 31, 2016.
