Nika Elder has become assistant professor in the Department of Art at American University in Washington, DC.

Amy Freund has received tenure and been promoted to associate professor in the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

Paul B. Jaskot, formerly professor of the history of art and architecture and director of Studio χ at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois, has been appointed professor of art history and director of Wired! Lab at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

Jenni Sorkin has received tenure in the History of Art and Architecture Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She became associate professor on July 1, 2017.

May Sun, an artist and former lecturer at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, California, has become a 2017–18 artist in residence at the Rinehart School of Sculpture at Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.

Rebecca Uchill has left the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge for a position at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth.

Lisa Young has resigned from her position in the College of Art and Design at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Museums and Galleries

William J. Chiego has become director emeritus for the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas, to acknowledge his twenty-five years of service.

Elizabeth Chodos, formerly executive and creative director of Oxbow in Saugatuck, Michigan, has been appointed director of the Regina Gouger Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Erin B. Coe, director of the Hyde Collection in Glen Falls, New York, has accepted the directorship of the Palmer Museum of Art at Pennsylvania State University in State College.

William L. Coleman, formerly NEH Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Library Company of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania, has been named associate curator of American art at the Newark Museum in Newark, New Jersey.

Alexa Greist, previously at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut, has been named assistant curator of prints and drawings for the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto.

Tarah Hogue, formerly curator at Grunt Gallery in Vancouver, British Columbia, has become the first senior curatorial fellow at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Wanda Nanibush has been named assistant curator of Canadian and indigenous art for the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto.

Christina Olsen, previously director of the Williams College Museum of Art in Williamstown, Massachusetts, has been appointed director of the University of Michigan Museum of Art in Ann Arbor.

Sylvie Patry has joined the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, France, as deputy director for curatorial affairs and collections. Previously she was deputy director for collections and exhibitions and Gund Family Chief Curator for the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

H. Alexander Rich, assistant professor of art history and director of the Melvin and Burks Galleries at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, has also been named curator and director of galleries and exhibitions for the Polk Museum of Art at his school.

Tina Rivers Ryan, formerly curatorial assistant in the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, has become assistant curator at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York.

Stephanie Sparling Williams, previously John Walsh Fellow at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut, has joined the Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, as assistant curator and visiting scholar.

Daniel H. Weiss, president and chief operating officer of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, has been chosen to lead his institution as chief executive officer.

Cole Woodcox has been appointed director of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges, a consortium of thirty North American universities based in Asheville, North Carolina.

Organizations and Publications

Jo-Anne Birnie Danzker, previously director of the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, Washington, has been appointed director and chief executive officer of the Biennale of Sydney in Australia.

Gilberto Cárdenas, executive director of the Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture in South Bend, Indiana, has joined the board of trustees for the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Art, based in Washington, DC.

John Davis, previously Alice Pratt Brown Professor of Art at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, and executive director of the Terra Foundation for American Art’s Global Academic Programs and Terra Foundation Europe, has been appointed under secretary for museums and research/provost at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

Thomas W. Gaehtgens, director of the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, has decided to retire in spring 2018.

Brooke Davis Anderson has been named Edna S. Tuttleman Director of the museum at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia.

Virginia Brilliant, formerly Ulla R. Searing Curator of Collections at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida, has been appointed curator-in-charge of European paintings at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in California.

Emma Imbrie Chubb, a doctoral student and presidential fellow in the Department of Art History at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, has been named the inaugural Charlotte Feng Ford ’83 Curator of Contemporary Art at the Smith College Museum of Art in Northampton, Massachusetts.

Sarah Guernsey, formerly vice president for publishing and design at the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois, has been appointed deputy director for curatorial affairs at the museum.

Anna Katz, curatorial fellow at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in California since 2015, has joined the museum as assistant curator.

Christine Sciacca has become associate curator of European art, 300–1400 CE, at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. She was previously assistant curator in the Manuscripts Department at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California.

Organizations and Publications

Yolanda Sánchez has retired from her position in the Fine Arts and Cultural Affairs Division of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department and the art program at Miami International Airport in Florida.

Roger Thorp has left Tate Publishing in London, England, for the position of editorial director at Thames and Hudson, also in London.

Makeda Best, formerly assistant professor in visual studies at the California College of the Arts in Oakland and San Francisco, California, has been named Richard L. Menschel Curator of Photography at the Harvard Art Museums in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Connie H. Choi, formerly assistant curator of American art at the Brooklyn Museum in New York, has been appointed associate curator of the permanent collection at the Studio Museum in Harlem, also in New York.

Joey Orr, formerly Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellow at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Illinois, has been appointed Andrew W. Mellon Assistant Curator for Research for the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

James Merle Thomas, professor of global contemporary art at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has been appointed executive director of Vox Populi, also in Philadelphia.

Deborah Bright has retired from her position as chair of the Department of Fine Arts at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, to pursue her art practice. Bright previously served as interim dean of fine arts at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, where she also chaired the Photography Department and was a tenured professor.

Museums and Galleries

Camille Ann Brewer, formerly executive director of the Black Metropolis Research Consortium at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has been appointed curator of contemporary textile art at the George Washington University Museum and the Textile Museum, both in Washington, DC.

Heather Campbell Coyle, curator of American art for the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington, has been promoted to chief curator at her institution.

Betsy Fahlman has become adjunct curator of American art at the Phoenix Art Museum in Arizona. She will divide her time between the museum and Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts in Tempe, where she has served as a professor of art history for more than twenty-eight years.

Organizations and Publications

Robin Veder, formerly associate professor of humanities, art history, and visual culture at Pennsylvania State University in Harrisburg, has been appointed executive editor of American Art, the journal of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC.

Jacki Apple has retired from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, after thirty-three years of teaching in the Humanities and Sciences Department, where she served as a faculty-elected codirector in the absence of a chair from 2012 to 2014.

Kathryn Bunn-Marcuse has accepted a tenure-track position at the University of Washington in Seattle. She will hold a joint appointment as assistant professor in the Division of Art History and curator of Northwest Native American art at the Burke Museum.

Faye Raquel Gleisser has been appointed assistant professor of art history in the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Morten Steen Hansen has become a lecturer in the Division of Art History at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Dan Paz has been appointed lecturer by the University of Washington in Seattle for the Division of Art’s program in interdisciplinary visual arts.

Richard J. Powell has stepped down as dean of humanities at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He will remain John Spencer Bassett Professor of Art and Art History.

Kate Roberts has been appointed lecturer in Division of Art’s 3D4M program for ceramics, glass, and sculpture at the University of Washington in Seattle.

David Yager has been inaugurated as president of University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He joined the school last year after serving as dean of the Arts Division and distinguished professor of art at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Museums and Galleries

Birgitta Augustin has left her position as associate curator of Asia art and acting head of the Department of the Arts of Asia and the Islamic World at the Detroit Institute of Arts in Michigan.

Meredith Dean, previously an administrator for the Association of Art Museum Curators, has joined the Museum of Modern Art in New York as development assistant for exhibition and program funding.

Kevin Dumouchelle has joined the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African Art as curator. Previously he oversaw the African and Pacific Islands collections at the Brooklyn Museum in New York.

Erin Hanas, formerly academic programs coordinator at Duke University’s Nasher Museum of Art in Durham, North Carolina, has become associate curator of academic programs for the Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.

Lehti Keelmann has been appointed assistant curator of Western art at the University of Michigan Museum of Art in Ann Arbor, where she will oversee the collection of European art spanning the medieval period through the twentieth century.

Abraham Thomas, previously director of the Sir John Soane’s Museum in London, England, has been named Fleur and Charles Bresler Curator-in-Charge at the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery in Washington, DC.

Sarah Newman, previously consulting curator of modern art for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, has been named James Dicke Curator of Contemporary Art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, also in Washington, DC.

Stephanie E. Rozman has joined the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California, as assistant curator for Asian art.

Khristaan D. Villela, formerly professor of art history and scholar in residence at Santa Fe University of Art and Design in New Mexico, has been named director of the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe.

Glenn J. Hild, a professor of painting and drawing and interim dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, has retired.

Arnold Kemp, associate professor and chair of the Department of Painting and Printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, has been named dean of graduate studies for the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois. He has also joined the school’s Department of Painting and Sculpture as a professor.

Donna Moran has been appointed dean of the School of Art and Design at Pratt Institute’s campus in Utica, New York, called the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute.

Michael Wille, professor of art at Illinois State University in Normal, has been named director of his college’s School of Art. He had previously served as interim director since 2014.

Museums and Galleries

Lucinda Barnes, chief curator and director of programs at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive in California, has retired.

Peter Nisbet, chief curator of the University of North Carolina’s Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill, has ended his service as interim director. The new director began work in July.

Halona Norton-Westbrook, associate curator of contemporary art and head of visitor engagement at the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio, has been appointed to the newly created position of director of collections.

Nicole Simpson has joined the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, as assistant curator of prints and drawings.

Organizations and Publications

Mariët Westermann has been promoted to executive vice president for programs and research at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, based in New York.

Patricia C. Phillips, dean of graduate studies at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, has been appointed chief academic officer and academic dean of the Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She will begin her new position on July 1.

Charlie White, professor of fine art in the Roski School of Art and Design at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, has become head of the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Judy Ditner has been appointed Richard Benson Assistant Curator of Photography and Digital Media at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut.

Laura Fry, the inaugural Haub Curator of Western American Art for the Tacoma Museum of Art in Tacoma, Washington, has joined the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as curator of art.

Francesca Giani, guest curator for the University of Oklahoma’s Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art in Norman, has been named curator of modern and contemporary art at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.

Jacqueline Terrassa, managing museum educator for gallery and studio programs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York since 2011, has become the new Woman’s Board Endowed Chair of Museum Education at the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois.

Julia Tulovsky, associate curator for Rutgers University’s Zimmerli Art Museum in New Brunswick, New Jersey, has been promoted to curator of Russian and Soviet Nonconformist Art.

Leo G. Mazow, formerly associate professor of art history at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, has been appointed Louise B. and J. Harwood Cochrane Curator and Head of the Department of American Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond.
