And Diverse Are Their Hues

Córdoba, Spain

And Diverse Are Their Hues is the Third Biennial Hamad bin Khalifa Symposium on Islamic Art, sponsored by Virginia Commonwealth School of the Arts, VCUQatar and the Qatar Foundation. The keynote speech will be given by Sheila Blair and Jonathan Bloom, who share the Hamad bin Khalifa Endowed Chair of Islamic Art, Virginia Commonwealth University and the Norma Jean Calderwood University Chair of Islamic and Asian Art, Boston College. The 13 speakers come from the Middle East, Europe and the United States and are leading scholars in Islamic art, architecture, literature and philosophy. Their papers will focus on a range of issues in different media, from the practical and political reasons for certain color choices to discussions of the phenomenology of color in medieval optics, Sufi mysticism and the Islamic garden. Registration is free and open to the public at www.islamicartdoha.org.
