Art after Disasters: Symposium

Category: Calls For Papers [View all]
Posted by: KAIST
Deadline: 04/10/10

International Symposium in Seoul, Korea, May 21th, 2011.
Organized by Association of Western Art History.
This symposium explores the array of artistic responses to the natural and man-made disasters throughout history. Artists have long commemorated natural crises, urban catastrophes, and political tragedies, stirring fear and sense of loss in the name of religion, community, or State. Yet, facing the existential quandary of how to cope with the extremity of violence and destruction, a question arises: Can art both describe disaster and its aftermath and offer redemptive possibilities?
In an effort to address the frustrations and possibilities that disastrous phenomena have presented artists, this symposium seeks papers that examine the visual languages by which disasters and their effects have been interpreted; address the subjects of disaster as catalysis for artistic experimentation.
Send an abstract (max. 400 words) and a brief CV to awah@hanmail.net
