Charles Darwin and the art of evolution: 9-11 Sept 2010 Sydney
Type: Conferences & Symposia [View all]
Posted by: Art Gallery of New South Wales
Deadline: 09/09/10
Charles Darwin and the art of evolution explores the impact of Darwin’s theories upon art and other visual cultures and the ways they, in turn, illuminate intriguing dimensions of his theories. As Darwin sailed into Sydney Harbour on 12 January 1836, the conference explores Charles Darwin’s ventures in Sydney Cove through art, his contact with the Indigenous people of New South Wales and his collection of Australian fauna and flora. Through visual cultures, it will also examine the subsequent impact of Darwinist theories upon Australian Indigenous people, and the global repercussions of his theory of ‘sexual selection’ upon biocultures and eugenics.
Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney 9-11 September 2010. Presented by the College of Fine Arts, UNSW, the Art Association of Australia & NZ and Art Gallery of NSW.
