National Professional-Development Workshops for Artists
CAA’s National Professional-Development Workshops for Artists, sustained by a generous grant from the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation, focus on supporting visual artists in underserved areas.
“Professionalizing and Enhancing Your Art Practice” in Birmingham, Alabama

CAA has selected Space One Eleven to sponsor and present the next CAA National Professional-Development Workshop for Artists. The one-day event is scheduled for Saturday, November 20, 2010, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM; it takes place at Space One Eleven, 2409 2nd Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35203.
The full-day workshop, called “Professionalizing and Enhancing Your Art Practice,” will present professional-development sessions filled with career-building skills for visual artists, including valuable tools, tips, resources, best practices, and networking suggestions.
Larry Jens Anderson, professor of foundation studies at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, will conduct the interactive morning workshop. He describes it like this: “The complex, perplexing ins-and-outs of putting together professional information for inclusion in job applications, gallery presentations, or catalogues is frustrated by the fact it is personal. This workshop on bios, résumés, and artist’s statements is about subverting the overly personal and getting to the meat of it all.” Participants should bring materials recently used for personal data on a laptop (preferred) or USB drive, and as hard copies.
Erin Wright, chair of art and art history at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB), will lead an engaging afternoon panel comprised of artists and professors from UAB and Birmingham-Southern College. These experts will provide an overview of myriad topics such as “Getting into Galleries,” “Marketing and Marketing Yourself,” “Pricing Your Work,” and “Social Media.”
Opportunities for group networking will begin and end the workshop. A light breakfast and lunch are included for participants, and a postworkshop reception will take place from 4:00 to 5:30 PM.
