National Professional-Development Workshops for Artists

CAA’s National Professional-Development Workshops for Artists, sustained by a generous grant from the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation, focus on supporting visual artists in underserved areas.

“Marketing and Entrepreneurship for Artists” at Oregon College of Art and Craft

CAA has selected Oregon College of Art and Craft, along with Pacific Northwest College of Art in partnership with Portland’s Museum of Contemporary Craft, to sponsor and present a CAA National Professional-Development Workshop for Artists. The one-day event is scheduled for Saturday, September 25, 2010, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. It will be hosted by Oregon College of Art and Craft in its Jean Vollum Drawing, Painting and Photography Building on campus at 8245 Southwest Barnes Road, in the West Hills of Portland.

The full-day workshop, called “Marketing and Entrepreneurship for Artists: Maximizing Your Practice,” will present professional-development seminars filled with career-building skills for emerging and established artists, including valuable tools, tips, resources, best practices, and networking suggestions. Presenters from the Portland area and the Pacific Northwest will conduct the workshops, which offer two options for morning and afternoon sessions.

Opportunities for group networking will begin and end the workshop. A light breakfast and lunch are included for participants, and a postworkshop reception will take place from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.

Morning Sessions: 9:00 AM–NOON

“Marketing 101: Getting Started” is designed for professionals at the beginning of their careers. Marketing and business basics will be covered, including use of the internet and social media to promote your work, continuing your education, licensing, and dos and don’ts for marketing your art to galleries.

“Entrepreneurship 101: Taking Personal and Direct Control of Your Business” will discuss lives embedded in creative practice. Designed to recognize that artists are essentially business entrepreneurs, this session will include topics like using your talents to connect to other avenues of business as a source of income, among others.

Afternoon Sessions: 1:00–4:00 PM

“Marketing 201: Thinking outside the Box” will focus on going beyond the usual marketing strategies. Designed for those who already have solid basic marketing skills in place, this session will cover alternative strategies such as seeking commissions and multitasking and multicreating your art and skills for the business world.

“Entrepreneurship 201: The Company Perspective” is designed to help prepare the artist for a career that uses his or her artistic talents in the outside world. Who are the creative firms, and what are they looking for?

Sponsors

Established in 1907, Oregon College of Art and Craft (OCAC) is a principal center for education in, dialogue about, and mastery of contemporary craft. The college offers a joint MFA in applied craft and design with Pacific Northwest College of Art, a BFA in crafts, two certificate programs, and year-round studio classes and workshops for adults and children of all ages and skill levels. As the only accredited private art college west of the Mississippi to offer a BFA in crafts, OCAC is a superb laboratory for the invention of modern craft.

Since its founding in 1909, Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) has become a leader in innovative educational programs that connect students to a global perspective in visual arts and design. In addition to its nine BFA degrees, PNCA offers graduate education with an MFA in visual studies, as well as an MFA in applied craft and design developed in collaboration with OCAC. With the support of PNCA+FIVE (Ford Institute for Visual Education), the college has established a partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Craft.

Committed to the advancement of craft since 1937, the Museum of Contemporary Craft is one of Oregon’s oldest cultural institutions. Centrally located in Portland’s Pearl District, the museum is nationally acclaimed for its curatorial program and is a vibrant center for investigation and dialogue, expanding the definition of craft and the way audiences experience it.

Founded in 1911, the College Art Association serves the needs and interests of 12,000 individual and 2,000 institutional members. It publishes two scholarly journals in art history, an online reviews journal for books and exhibitions, a weekly email newsletter, and a website with news about the organization, its members, and the larger art and academic worlds. CAA also hosts an Annual Conference for 4,000 to 6,000 artists, art historians, and students, provides career counseling, and advocates for national issues in the visual arts.
