Open Call: Fully Funded Studio Residency for Women Artists of Color The John and Lynn Kearney Fellowship for Equity at Gallery Aferro

Gallery Aferro 73 Market St Newark NJ 07102 aferro.org and aferrostudios.org

https://aferro.org/current-open-calls/

Deadline: 8/1/2019 @ 11:59pm EST, for Residencies starting 2/20/2020

Gallery Aferro announces the John and Lynn Kearney Fellowship for Equity in support of gender-based, racial and economic justice. The new fellowship, open to Women Artists of Color of any age, will cover all workspace studio costs of six months each for two artists annually, along with a restriction-free stipend and bespoke solo programming opportunities within the vibrant context of Gallery Aferro and Newark, NJ. Collectives are welcome to apply, and there are no geographical restrictions. The first six-month rotation is from February 20, 2020- August 20, 2020.

For more than 10 years, resident artists at Gallery Aferro have had 24/7 access to large studios, ongoing first consideration for a range of on and off-site opportunities, access to our studio blog, and generous one-on-one career and technical support from staff. The growing network of residency alumni is an increasingly powerful, multigenerational group of contemporary artists working across media. Participation in the residency program includes a platform to share and participate in a community of artists and others through informal networking and participation in seasonal open studios and artist talks at the gallery. As a presenting and workspace organization run by artists, we are dedicated to providing opportunities to our residents in the form of exhibitions, opportunities, advocacy, visiting curators, and letters of recommendation. The work-only studios average more than 600 sq. ft. per studio, and have dedicated storage space and high ceilings. The gallery is located just 5 blocks from Newark Penn Station and is walking distance to other galleries in the city as well as a wide range of local businesses and notable sites.

Creating a fellowship, like any other act making and holding space for the arts, is an expression of what and who we value. It is an intentional, creative act, representing an interruption of the inertia of the status quo.
