Lie, Cheat, Steal: Contemporary Art and Ethics

The Kresge Gallery at Lyon College invites submissions of visual artwork for an exhibition exploring the intersection of Art and Ethics. In Contemporary Art appropriation has become a common practice; many artists weave falsehoods and half-truths into their work; and some art-makers walk a fine line between collaboration and exploitation. Daily life in general can also be filled with moral dilemmas and ethical gray-areas. This exhibition welcomes entries from artists in any media whose work addresses, explores, critiques, or perhaps even employs some form of lying, cheating, or stealing (broadly defined).

"Lie, Cheat, Steal" will be hosted by the Kresge Gallery, an art exhibition space and center for academic and artistic discourse in the Lyon College community. Critical inquiry is an integral part of our mission, and honor and integrity are core values at Lyon. But what does this look like for a 21st century artist? Contemporary artists borrow images and ideas, create fictions, exaggerate facts, and manipulate viewers’ emotions. How far is too far? The "Lie, Cheat, Steal" exhibition seeks to frame issues of honesty and integrity in ways that may be serious, humorous, even provocative.

The Kresge Gallery is located in the historic Alphin Building on Lyon College Campus in Batesville, Arkansas. Made possible by a gift from the Kresge Foundation, this 1050 square foot exhibition space hosts a variety of exhibitions throughout the academic year: traveling collections, group and solo shows by professional artists, and work by Lyon College students. www.facebook.com/KresgeGalleryLyonCollege/

Works will be selected by members of the Lyon College chapter of Kappa Pi, with input from Ian Campbell, Assistant Professor of Art. Kappa Pi is an International Collegiate Honorary Society that promotes artistic talents and achievements for its members. To learn more visit kappapiart.com. Ian Campbell is an artist/educator who joined the Lyon faculty in 2016. He holds an MFA from Ohio University. His work can be viewed at iancampbellphoto.com.

All media are welcome, however, we may not be able to accommodate pieces with very complicated or specific installation needs. Display requirements such as pedestals, shelves, projectors, etc. should be noted on the entry form. Works must arrive ready to hang: framed or otherwise professionally presented with suitable hanging hardware. 

There is no entry fee. Artists are responsible for delivery of accepted works to the gallery by October 31 and arrange for timely pick-up of work after the closing date. Kresge Gallery insures work in the gallery against all damage or loss. Work is not insured by Kresge Gallery during shipping. The Kresge Gallery does not handle sales of artworks, but we would be happy to refer inquiries to the artist.

To apply, email images for up to 4 pieces (additional detail images may be included) to ian.campbell@lyon.edu with the subject line “Lie, Cheat, Steal.” Images should be saved as high quality .jpg files (at least 1000 pixels on the shortest side). Title each file with your last name, first name, and entry number (e.g. Campbell_Ian_1.jpg, or Campbell_Ian_1detail).

October 7: Artists notified of accepted works

October 31: Work due at Kresge Gallery, 2300 Highland Road, Batesville, AR 72501

November 5: Exhibition Opens

November 8: Reception and Curators’ talk

December 6: Exhibition closes
