ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The Stamp Gallery at the University of Maryland seeks artwork related to Asian American experiences of the impact of COVID-19, the Model Minority Myth, and inter-ethnic and interracial solidarity for an online exhibition.
In early 2020, the United States saw the impact of COVID-19 – a new strain of Coronavirus– across the nation. While the outbreaks of COVID-19 affected all racial and ethnic groups, it was labeled as the “Chinese Virus” by politicians. By racializing the virus, an increase in hate crimes and discrimination against Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI) occurred and continue to occur. The conditional statuses of the “model minority” and “honorary whites” that Asian Americans, particularly successful East Asians, enjoyed for the last few decades has been revealed to be entirely provisional.
This summer, Stamp Gallery will be exhibiting an online curated experience tentatively titled “Not Your Model Minority” in an attempt to capture the turning point for the AAPI community in the United States. Works that promote discussion about AAPI history, presence in media, and responses to race-based violence are encouraged.
Selected artwork will be exhibited on an online exhibition platform hosted by the Stamp Gallery, University of Maryland, College Park.
