Exhibition & Teaching Residency: Emerging Visions: Perspectives on African-American Experience

Type: Exhibition Opportunities [View all]
Posted by: Residential College in the Arts & Humanities, Michigan State University
Deadline: Fri, October 2nd, 2020

Applicants are sought for a solo exhibition in the RCAH LookOut Art Gallery at Michigan State University from January 18 (MLK Jr. Day) to February 26, 2021 and accompanying virtual teaching residency to include artist’s talk, class visits, workshops, and engagement with student artist-activists exhibiting in the Social Justice Art Festival co-hosted by the RCAH and James Madison College on January 22.* Honorarium of $3,000, cost of materials and/or digital tools needed for residency, and $750 toward shipping, paid.

This is the 10th in an annual series of exhibitions and visits by emerging and mid-career artists whose works reflect on Black, African-American, or African diasporic experience past or present and explore art as social activism. The Emerging Visions selection committee considers work that reflects on all aspects of human rights and social justice. The exhibition and residency will be held in conjunction with the Social Justice Art Festival, a day-long annual event held the week of MLK Jr. Day that includes visual art displays, performances, workshops, and guest performances from emerging artists.

Due to the ongoing constraints and contingencies of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Emerging Visions residency will be held virtually, as a series of online events to be held over the course of the exhibition’s run, and will not require travel. The exhibition will be held in-person in the RCAH LookOut Gallery and promptly documented for simultaneous digital distribution.*

The Residential College in the Arts and Humanities is a living-learning environment in which creative explorations of the arts and humanities are cultivated through emphases on transcultural studies, ethics, civic engagement, and the activist roles of these disciplines in shaping social change. For further information about the RCAH, to read about previous Emerging Visions participants, and to see images of LookOut Art Gallery exhibitions, please visit rcah.msu.edu.

All media considered; $750 maximum to cover shipping. Please send: file transfer (Dropbox, Google Drive or equivalent) with 20 jpeg images of work available for this exhibition and numbered to correspond to image list with dimensions; 250-word artist statement; cover letter with contact information; and CV to rcah.lookout@msu.edu. Contact Tessa Paneth-Pollak at tpaneth@msu.edu for further information. Application deadline: October 2, 2020. Finalists will be notified by mid-October 2020.

*Dates of residency and dates/format of exhibition subject to adjustment if Michigan State University makes changes to Spring 2021 academic calendar and campus reopening plan in light of COVID-19.
