Feminists Connect Exhibition Call for Work

It is well known womxn have been sidelined in history books, galleries, museums and media. This of course is a tremendous detriment as it leaves out half of the populations’ lives and perspectives. Many feminist artists have created artwork to be an act in part to remedy this in small and large ways, from the prominent work of Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party (though this is a broader look at all womxn not just womxn artists) to May Stevens’ Portrait of SOHO Artists to Marybeth Edelson’s Some Living American Women Artists to Jann Haworth’s Work in Progress to Carolee Schneeman’s Hand/Heart for Ana Mendieta to the more broader explorations of women’s experience, notably with regard to race, such as Mickalene Thomas’s Femmes Noirs, Kara Walker’s A Subtlety and Faith Ringgold’s For the Women’s House; and really all of the work of Renee Cox and Wanda Ewing.

LFF Founder and exhibit co-juror Sally Brown created her Feminist Tribute series, in this lineage. Works like these are important not only to honor the womxn and artists but to introduce and document these artists for people who may not be aware of them–and in so doing, bringing them into history, whether official or not, definitely complex and feminist.  Recognizing and being aware of womxn and feminist artists before and around us is so important–though not easy.

Les Femmes Folles invites artists of all genres, media and levels, to submit artwork that has a connection to another feminist and/or artist who is a woman for inclusion in a 2021 online and potentially gallery exhibition*, juried by LFF founder Sally Brown and artist and art educator Leslie Sotomayor, in light of the forthcoming 10th anniversary of Les Femmes Folles 2021). Submit your work (up to 5 images) along with a short description of the work of the artist (any genre as well, past or present) and how the work inspired/s your work (250 words max). Include a short (up to 250 word) bio in the email as well, to sallery_art@zohomail.com.

*Print exhibition would include small (up to 20x20″) works delivered to a gallery in Morgantown, WV.

Timeline:

Submission deadline: January 31, 2021
Online Exhibition Launch: March 1, 2021 (Women’s History Month)
Print Exhibition* (potential): May 1-30, 2021 (Mother’s Day Month)

Files: up to 5 .jpgs labeled with “lastname_title” 300 dpi
Text in email to include: Art list with title, size, media, price; feminist connect statement (up too 250 words), bio (up to 250 words), website / social media handles.

Jurors:

Leslie C. Sotomayor is an artist, curator, and holds a dual PhD in Art Education and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Penn State. She focuses on Gloria Anzaldúa’s theory of conocimiento and autohistoria-teoría, a feminist writing practice of theorizing one’s experiences as transformative acts to guide her teaching methodology and create curriculum  for empowerment and transformation in curating art/educational spaces/communities that decolonize White hegemonic canons. Sotomayor has completed artworks, installations and curated numerous art exhibitions including: Let’s Pretend (2020), Entre Mundos/Traveling In-Between (2018), Hilos Rojos (2017) a solo traveling exhibition in Cuba and Borrandofronteras/Erasingborders (2015) a Cuban and Cuban-American Collaborative Art Exhibition & Cultural Exchange. Sotomayor has numerous publications about her research and work in the United States and Cuba engaging in testimonio, social change, and decolonizing curatorial projects, visual arts studio practice, research and scholarship, including her forthcoming book Teaching In/between (2021). Sally Brown (ne Deskins) is an artist, curator and writer currently based in Morgantown. Her artwork including drawing, painting and performance, explores womanhood, motherhood and the body.  She has exhibited her work in spaces nationally and in the UK. She has won two awards for illustration for Intimates and Fools and Leaves of Absence, both with poetry by Laura Madeline Wiseman. Her writing has been published in Hyperallergic, Women’s Art Journal and Artslant, among others. She has curated group shows in Omaha, Nashville, Pittsburgh and Morgantown. She holds a Bachelor of Arts-Studio Art, a Master of Public Administration and Master of Arts- Art History and Feminist Theory. She is a member of the College Art Association National Committee on Women in the Arts, edits the online journal Les Femmes Folles, and currently serves as Exhibits Coordinator for WVU Libraries.
