7th International Forum for Doctoral Candidates in East European Art History

May 6th-7th, 2021

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Institut für Kunst- und Bildgeschichte

Chair of Eastern European Art History

The Institut für Kunst- und Bildgeschichte at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin will host the 7th International Forum for Doctoral Candidates in East European Art History on May 6th and 7th 2021. The forum, which is initiated by the chair of Eastern European Art History, serves as a platform for exchange amongst junior researchers who centre the arts of eastern Europe in a historiographical manner in their research.

Since 2014 the forum has been dedicated to conceptual questions and methodological problems regarding art historical “area studies” in the field of eastern European history across time. The yearly meetings offer a space for exchange regarding methodological and practical problems surrounding the various dissertation projects, as well as an opportunity to network with your peer group. The Forum 2021 will center around the dual aspects of: close interconnection between the eastern European cultural sphere and the rest of the world, as well as its entanglement in historical, social, political and cultural constellations which can be expanded to the local, regional, inter-state and global level. Historical material (e.g. archival materials and personal memory) will be emphasised, with particular attention drawn to the processes of historization and the surrounding discourse.

We therefore invite doctoral candidates to apply with their dissertation topic in order to enter into discussion with like-minded peers. Next year the forum will take place digitally, via Zoom over the course of two days. On the 6th of May we will begin with a Morning Coffee Chat, open to all participants. The Chat will feature three moderated discussions on three different topics across time, discipline, and space, which will each span 45-60 minutes. Aside from verbal speech this will allow for exchange through a chat-window and digital poster presentations. The 7th of May will feature the presentation of selected research topics on four conference panels (totaling twelve speakers), each of which will be led by a senior academic of the field. These researchers will not only moderate their respective panels but also offer critique and commentary on the presentations themselves.

The event will be held in English.

To secure attendance to the forum, doctoral candidates are invited to apply by submitting their dissertation topic. Those who wish to present on their research are requested to submit a proposal in either English or German by February 28th 2021. The proposal should meet the following requirements:

- must be max. 4000 characters (including spaces)

- must be in a workable format (i.e. not PDF)

- contains author’s name & affiliation, title of dissertation, and e-mail address

Please specify whether your exposé may be published by adding the following sentence to the end of your submission: “My exposé may / may not be published on the forums website (http://www.kunstgeschichte.hu-berlin.de/institut/lehrstuehle/lehrstuhl-fuer-kunstgeschichte-osteuropas/internationales-doktorandenforum/ )”. Proposals should be submitted to:

Katalin Cseh-Varga (katalin.cseh-varga@hu-berlin.de) and Dorothea Douglas (dorothea.c.douglas@hu-berlin.de).
