To Be Named: The cultural politics of naming and being named

Type: Calls For Papers [View all]

Deadline: Mon, March 1st, 2021

This is an open call for art work on the cultural politics of naming: Submission deadline for abstracts March 1st, 2021. Names are a key aspect to our identity. They are what we call ourselves and often they determine how we live and move through the world, as well as and how we are understood or misunderstood. They are how we are inscribed, documented and recorded by others. They also carry ancestral lineages and knowledge of our Mother Tongue, as well as cultural knowledge and traditions. As a result, our names embody how we trace ourselves through family lines, as well as how we are tracked by the state or government. They are highly personal, at the same time as being wholly political. How is it then, that we rarely explore, investigate and totally face what it means To Be Named?

We are an interdisciplinary team creating an edited volume (open access) on the cultural politics of naming. We seek art works in all media (sound, photography, video, poetry, painting, paper, installation, performance, etc.) that will help us rethink how names mean and to whom. Themes include: the political aspects of naming (gender, race, and power structures); colonizing and decolonizing through naming (toponyms, cosmologies, and place names); as well as personal narratives on how a name defines or does not define you. To Be Named is in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution’s Recovering Voices program (See https://naturalhistory.si.edu/research/anthropology/programs/recovering-voices), the EU funded CoLing project Minority Languages, Major Opportunities. Collaborative Research, Community Engagement and Innovative Educational Tools (see https://coling.al.uw.edu.pl/about-us/), and the Experimental Humanities Collaborative Network (EHCN) sponsored by the Open Society University Network (See https://opensocietyuniversitynetwork.org/education/curricula/ehcn/)

Please use this website to submit your abstract: https://coling.al.uw.edu.pl/to-be-named/ and include the following information: 1) a brief abstract describing your project and art submission (this can be in your Mother Tongue together with the English translation), 2) a short biography. Maximum length of the abstract 300 words. We accept and encourage abstracts from all over the world. If you are selected you will be asked to submit the art work for the volume by July 30th, 2021.
