Regional Biennial Juried Sculpture Exhibition

June 10 – October 2, 2021

Awards:
Merit awards are monetary prizes awarded by the juror.
1st place….$2,500   2nd place…..$1,250   3rd place…..$850  4th place…..$400

All awardees must be present at the opening reception to receive the award.

Eligibility: Open to all living artists working in sculpture who have completed training or formal studies and reside within 200 miles of Saginaw Valley State University.

Specifications: Sculpture must be entirely original and completed within the last 5 years. Sculptures exhibited in any past Regional Biennial Juried Sculpture Exhibition at the Museum are not eligible. Each entry must be created by the person who submits it. No artwork may be removed from the exhibition until it ends on October 2, 2021.

Fee: $25 Member, $35 Non-Member, up to 3 entries

Presentation:
• Sculpture and sculpture components must be safe and easy to install
• cannot be hung from the ceilings of the Museum
• should not exceed 8’ in height and 5’ in width
• weigh no more than 300 pounds
• have no sharp edges
• consist of no hazardous materials or liquids of any kind.

Liability: All artwork will be insured while on the museum premises and up to the deadline for pick up by the artist at the end of the exhibition. The value of the sculpture must be stated on this entry form. Artists are responsible for insuring their artwork while it is in transit to and from the Museum.

Delivery of artwork: Sculptures accepted for exhibition must be delivered to the Museum between June 21 and 25 from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM or June 26, 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM. Deliveries may be unloaded at the cul-de-sac area of Fine Arts Drive near the Arbury Fine Arts Center entrance. If artwork must be assembled on site, you or someone you designate must be present to assemble it. Coordinate with museum staff for delivering and setting up your sculpture by calling 989-964-7125 or emailing ondish@svsu.edu.

Disqualification: Sculptures differing in quality from or otherwise not representative of the accepted digital image will be disqualified, based on the juror’s decisions.

Sales: Works of art in the exhibition will not be for sale.

Pick up work: Artwork must be picked up from the Museum between October 4 – 8, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM or October 9, 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM. Artwork can be loaded at the cul-de-sac area of Fine Arts Drive near the Arbury Fine Arts Center entrance. Pick up should be coordinated with MFSM staff by calling 989-964-7125. (Any unclaimed artwork left at the Museum after the deadline date for pick up will be disposed of at the discretion of the Museum. No artwork will become part of the Museum collection.) Reproduction: By entering the Regional Biennial Juried Sculpture Exhibition, the artist gives the MFSM permission to reproduce images for the catalog, publicity and education.

Notification: Artists will receive notification by mail after May 15, 2021. For mailed entries, CD of digital images of non-accepted artwork will be returned if the artist provides a self-addressed stamped envelope. Digital images of accepted artwork will be retained for the catalog, publicity and educational purposes and may be picked up with the artwork after the exhibition.

Entry procedures: Postmark deadline for receiving online or mailed entries is May 1, 2021.  Judging will be by professional quality digital images. Each artist may enter up to but not more than three sculptures and up to two detail images of each entry.

Digital files may be submitted online, or if mailing on a Microsoft Windows-compatible CD in jpg/jpeg file format only. No application format files will be accepted (such as Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Word, Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft PowerPoint, etc.) The top of the image should be oriented to the top of the screen. Each digital image should have complete information such as artist’s name, title, medium, dimensions (H x W x D), date work completed and insurance value. File size must be at least 300 dpi, larger than 800K and not to exceed 2MB (mailed or online entries).

Juror:

Stephanie James is a curator of modern and contemporary art with a focus on art of the African Diaspora. She holds an MA in art history from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. Ms. James is the Curator and Collection Educator for the Mott-Warsh Collection—a Flint-based private collection of over 700 works of art primarily created by African American artists—and Director of MW Gallery in Flint, Michigan. Prior to her current position, she worked at the Detroit Institute of Arts for nearly 16 years, serving as assistant curator of the General Motors Center for African American Art (2002-2009) and in various appointments in the museum’s education department (1993-2002). Additionally, she has worked with the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture as a member of their “Save Our African American Treasures” team of curators and conservators. Ms. James has organized numerous exhibitions, most recently “Examining Identity Constructions: Selections from the Mott-Warsh Collection” at MW Gallery (February 14 – July 25, 2020). She is a frequent participant in educational programming on the arts and has authored many essays on American artists.
