ONE WORK – Artist Open Call - Prospect Art

PROSPECT ART is a forward-thinking, Los Angeles-based artist-run organization that fosters artists’ careers by providing exposure through open dialogues, critical writing, project grants, and exhibitions.

The organization was conceived during the 2020 pandemic. Prospect Art is looking towards a world of representation and equality by creating new opportunities for local, national, and international artists. The organization is structured as an agile, responsive entity to serve artists, the local Los Angeles community, and beyond by supporting existing and new works to be presented to the public. We’re interested in breaking down silos and sharing information and knowledge to further the careers of artists and forge new alliances with the community.

Prospect Art seeks contemporary visual artists to submit work to be considered for online publication in our monthly ONE WORK series. We are looking for work by professional artists not currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. In this series, we are connecting arts writers with artists for a deep dive into one artwork.

We want to provide exposure to artists through focused critical writing about one of their works. We are interested in highlighting various conceptual-based works that approach contemporary issues in a new and exciting way, representative of the diverse voices and populations of the world. We are looking for recent work in this open call - comprehensive and project-based- completed within the past 1-3 years.

As a reference point, here’s a list of established contemporary artists and specific works that we think about as we envision this series.

Pierre Huyghe – Silence Score, Sophie Calle - Here Lie the Secrets of the Visitors of Green-Wood Cemetery, John Gerrard – Western Flag NFT, Gary Simmons – Fade to Black, Boyle Family – World Series, Shirin Neshat – Turbulent, Ragnar Kjartansson – The Visitors, Bunny Rodgers – Sister Unn’s, Adrian Villar Rojas – Pedazos De Las Personas Que Amamos, Cao Fei – RMB City, Bas Jan Ader – In Search of the Miraculous, Hito Steyerl – Factory of the Sun, Arthur Jafa – Love is the Message, The Message is Death, Samson Young – Muted Situations #22, Vajiko Chachkhiani – Living Dog Among Lions, Roberto Cuoghi – Imitation of Christ, Lisa Reihana – In Pursuit of Venus (infected),  Kader Attia – Narrative Vibrations, Michel Blazy – We Were The Robots, Pauline Boudry & Renate Lorenz – Moving Backwards, Candice Lin & Patrick Staff – Hormonal Fog, Christina Agapakis, Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, and Sissel Tolaas – Resurrecting the Sublime, Charles Gaines – Manifestos.

If you are unfamiliar and/or do not connect to the artists’ list above, you are probably not a good fit for this program.
