Virtual Artist in Residence Fall 2021

Type: Residencies, Workshops, Exchanges [View all]
Posted by: Montgomery College Rockville
Deadline: Sun, August 15th, 2021

Fall 2021 residency programming will be implemented virtually to accommodate our remote studio art and art history classes. We are seeking proposals for a virtual artist residency that focuses on artistic collaboration with students. The three-week residency will take place during October 2021.

The Rockville Art Department of Montgomery College is located on the Rockville Campus outside Washington, DC. The Germantown Art Department is located on the Germantown Campus of Montgomery College. The College has an enrollment of about 60,000 credit and noncredit students and is noted as being one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse in the nation, with student from over 170 countries enrolled.

The Art Department encourages proposals that cultivate collaborative work between artists and students. The three-week Artist in Residence program (AIR) augments the studio arts curriculum by providing students with direct hands-on experience in the arts that is guided by visiting artists. This is accomplished by: enabling students to work with contemporary artists other than faculty, fostering a vested commitment between artist, student and the educational setting of the College, and enhancing the Department’s curriculum.

We are seeking individuals or groups with a wide range of artistic practices outside the traditional studio arts foundation curriculum. Proposals should offer a mutually supportive creative learning environment between students, classes, and artist. Preference will go to proposals that emphasize the creative potential for working collaboratively in a virtual environment.

Professional artists or artists groups in all visual arts disciplines who are interested in working with students are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to applicants whose work and proposal expand on the working range of foundation level teaching and whose proposal utilizes the creative potential of the remote instruction and the virtual environment.

A stipend of $2500 will be available for the three-week residency. Student materials for any proposed collaboration with students will be supported through a separate budget and will be determined based on the size and scope of the work. Non-residential (housing and travel not provided).

Candidates should submit a proposal for collaborative processes and programming that provides foundation level students with direct hands-on experience in the arts that is guided by the Artist. Programming may include a virtual exhibition of the Artist’s work, virtual artist’s talks or studio visits, demonstrations, workshops, virtual field trips, guided research, individual and group critiques, use of social media, or other proposed virtual activities.

The selected artist will be expected to be available during scheduled class times over the three-week residency. The Artist will be provided with a calendar of the Art Department’s scheduled classes and will consult with the Special Projects Coordinator in preparing a program that is compatible with this schedule.
