The Athena Standards Residency is a one or two month-long studio artist residency program in the bustling metropolis of Athens, Greece. There is a Residency Period in the Spring from April-May, in the Summer from June-July, and in the Fall from September-October. The In-Studio Residency program provides the artist with an open format studio in an expansive, repurposed commercial building, with other Greek and international artists. Emerging and established artists, working in painting, mixed media, printmaking, performance, digital art, photography, video and installation are encouraged to apply. Starting in 2022, we will also be accepting writers. Starting in 2022, we will also be accepting writers. We are able to accommodate 12 artists per residency session. We encourage residents to consider staying for two months in order to develop a deeper knowledge of the city.
Professional development is integral to the Athena Standards Residency program. Art Historian and Curator Elizabeth Plessa works closely with each artist, scheduling individual studio visits and building off those initial consultations to recommend galleries of interest, openings, and museum shows for the artist to attend. Based on the path of the artist’s research she has arranged meetings with fellow arts professionals (and occasionally professionals outside the art world!) and invited artists to join her on studio visits, lectures and events.
In the project space we offer two weekly workshops in ceramics and mold-making. Giorgos Tserionis, a contemporary ceramicist and instructor at the School of Fine Arts Athens, leads a weekly course in hand building and wheel throwing. Clay and firing is provided, artists purchase their own glazes. Our studio manager and sculptor Orestis Karalis also conducts a weekly workshop in mold making and casting. Materials are provided. As studio manager, Orestis is incredibly helpful in procuring supplies and providing advice. Our lounge includes a projector and screen and we encourage artists to get together for a weekly dinner, wine and presentation of work. ASR also provides space for Athenian artists and recent graduates of the Athens School of Fine Arts, to encourage dialogue and collaboration between Greek artists and international artists-in-residence.
The cost of the residency is now €1200 for one month or €2200 for both months. The application deadlines are January 15 for Spring and Summer sessions, and June 1 for Fall sessions. Artists will be notified of their application status by February 1 for Spring and Summer 2022, and June 15 for Fall 2022.
