Luce/ACLS Dissertation Fellowships

Type: Awards, Grants, Fellowships [View all]
Posted by: American Council of Learned Societies
Deadline: Thu, October 27th, 2022

The American Council of Learned Societies invites applications for Luce/ACLS Dissertation Fellowships in American Art, which are made possible by the Henry Luce Foundation. These fellowships support graduate students working on topics in the history of art and visual culture of the United States, including all facets of Native American art, at any stage of PhD dissertation research or writing.

For the 2022-23 competition, each award comes with a stipend of $38,000 plus up to $4,000 for research and travel costs. The fellowships are portable and may be carried out in residence at the fellow’s home institution or at any other appropriate site for the research. The fellowship covers a single continuous period of nine to twelve months between June 2023 and May 2025. Projects should be focused on the art object and/or image and employ art historical or visual studies approaches.

-Applicants must be enrolled at degree-granting institutions in the United States and must be US citizens, permanent residents, DACA recipients, asylees, refugees, individuals granted Temporary Protected Status in the United States, or Indigenous individuals residing in the United States through rights associated with the Jay Treaty of 1794.

-PhD candidates in art history and related fields (such as Native American and Indigenous studies, ethnic studies, and African American studies, among others) may apply, so long as they demonstrate that their research is focused on the art object and primarily draws on art historical and visual studies methods. Students preparing theses for the Master of Fine Arts degree are not eligible.

-Applicants must have completed all requirements for the PhD except the dissertation by the beginning of the award period.

-Applicants may not have applied for this fellowship more than once previously.

ACLS believes that humanistic scholarship benefits from inclusivity of voices, perspectives, narratives, and subjects that have historically been underrepresented in academe. We also believe that diversity enhances the scholarly enterprise, and we encourage applications from PhD candidates from all degree-granting institutions in the United States.

Deadline: October 27, 2022, 9 pm EDT
