DIA Bulletin Call for Papers

Type: Calls For Papers [View all]
Posted by: Detroit Institute of Arts
Deadline: Mon, September 30th, 2024

The Bulletin of the Detroit Institute of Arts invites article proposals for volume 99 to be published in late 2025.

The Bulletin aims to reach a broad readership across the field of art history and accepts high-quality submissions addressing a wide range of time periods and subjects, including topics in the fine arts, decorative arts and design, film, and new media. Articles should focus on specific works within the DIA’s collection or on view in its galleries, especially those that generate research relevant to the DIA’s collection.

For volume 99, we seek to explore questions of intermediality and invite submissions that examine works in dialogue across media. This might include, but is not limited to, art-historical research into the fruitful exchange between different visual media, literature, performance, design, architecture, and social practice. Discussions of conservation research and treatments of multi- and mixed-media artworks are also welcome.

In addition to long and short research articles, we welcome proposals for contributions in alternative formats, such as artist interviews or extended artist statements.

If you are interested in contributing, please send your 250-word abstract to DIABulletin@dia.org by Monday, September 30, 2024. Please see Bulletin of the Detroit Institute of Arts submission guidelines for additional details.

Abstracts will be reviewed by the DIA Bulletin Editorial Board and authors will be notified of their acceptance by October 18, 2024. Completed manuscripts of articles, including a list of images, will be due by January 31, 2025.

Submissions must not be previously published in part or in whole, nor be under consideration elsewhere.

As noted in the Bulletin of the Detroit Institute of Arts Guidelines, longer articles will be 4,000–8,000 words including notes, with a maximum of twelve images, and shorter pieces will be 1,000–3,500 words including notes, with a maximum of seven images. In your abstract submission, please indicate whether your submission is for an extended article or for a shorter article.

Any questions may be directed to DIABulletin@dia.org
