Stories of Collective Authorship in Architecture
Special issue of Perspectives on Architecture and Urbanism

A building is never the work of a single mind. Yet architectural culture has long narrated the built environment through the figure of the singular author. This special issue invites historical, theoretical, and methodological contributions that rethink architectural authorship as a collective and relational phenomenon.

We seek papers examining how architectural ideas emerge through constellations of people, institutions, technologies, materials, and environments. Topics may include invisible or marginalized labor; collaboration within firms, design institutes, public agencies, and transnational teams; bureaucracy and organizational forms of design; computation and technical subcultures; clients, consultants, engineers, builders, and inhabitants; and non-human agency, including materials, infrastructures, algorithms, and environmental processes.

We also welcome experiments in architectural storytelling: collective biography, project microhistory, oral history, archival reconstruction, object histories, documentary essays, and other forms capable of making distributed authorship visible.

The deadline for submission is November 20th, 2026.

Selected authors will be invited to present a preliminary draft of their paper (approx. 2,000-2,500 words) at an upcoming international symposium (April or May 2027, in-person and online).

Full papers must be submitted by July 31st, 2027.
