Committees

As a membership organization, CAA depends on the dedication and commitment of the active members to ensure the vitality of its programs. Each year, hundreds of members serve on CAA committees, juries, and editorial boards, which oversee association governance, honors and awards, publications, and professional services. Except where noted, the CAA president appoints members of committees, juries, and editorial boards in consultation with the appropriate vice president.

CAA has two kinds of committees: those established by its By-laws, and those established by the Board of Directors. Additionally, ad hoc committees can be appointed from time to time by the President to address short-term needs of the Association. By-law committees are integral to CAA governance and may only be modified by vote of the full membership. All other committees function at the discretion of the Board of Directors and have specific responsibilities. They supervise ongoing projects and may recommend the initiation of programs and the adoption of statements which will further CAA’s goals. The Board of Directors is, however, the final supervisor of each committee’s activities. Among these, three are freestanding (Annual Conference Committee, Publications Committee, Exhibitions Committee), while the others fall into clusters. There are nine Professional Interests, Practices, and Standards (PIPS) committees; three editorial boards, and 16 juries (eleven awards juries, three publication grant juries, and two fellowship juires). Structure and administration differ for all committees, editorial boards, and juries, as does the scope of their responsibilities.
