How Art History Teaches--Images, Infrastructure, Cognition
Type: Conferences & Symposia [View all]
Posted by: University of Toronto
Deadline: Fri, October 16th, 2026
Please join us for the upcoming "How Art History Teaches--Images, Infrastructure, Cognition" symposium at the University of Toronto on Oct. 16th, and please spread the word.
Description: How do students learn to see historically? The answer has always depended on art historians’ systems for reproducing and handling their objects of study, from slide libraries to textbooks to digital databases. In 1926, the Carnegie Corporation began supplying North American universities with teaching materials that helped launch Canada’s first art history program at the University of Toronto. A century later, this international symposium asks how pedagogical infrastructure has shaped the discipline, and what cognitive research can tell us about how students learn to look, remember, and interpret.
